The regional executive looked toward the employees.
“How many people saw this?”
No one answered.
The Black woman did.
“All of them.”
The director began speaking quickly.
“This is being misunderstood.”
The chairwoman said nothing.
He continued.
“She came in with no appointment.”
Still nothing.
“She demanded access to an unreleased vehicle.”
Nothing.
“She refused normal financing procedures.”
The regional executive looked toward him.
“She owns the company that just paid cash for this dealership.”
The director’s mouth tightened.
“That doesn’t mean I knew.”
The Black woman finally spoke.
“You shouldn’t have needed to.”
The sentence stopped him.
She looked around the showroom.
The younger employees stared back.
A few had shame on their faces.
Others looked afraid.
The customer near the espresso counter quietly lowered his phone.
The chairwoman continued:
“You’re thinking the problem is that you didn’t recognize me.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“The problem is what you were comfortable doing before you knew who I was.”
The sales director said nothing.
The regional executive stepped closer to the tray and extinguished the remaining flame beneath a metal lid.
The room smelled faintly of burned paper.
The chairwoman looked toward the director.
“I asked for one thing.”
“You asked me to read a document.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“I made a mistake.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You made several decisions.”
He stared.
“You decided I didn’t belong here before you verified anything.”
“You decided my refusal to finance was arrogance.”
“You decided the document was fake without reading it.”
“You decided humiliating me in front of your staff was appropriate.”
“And then you burned something because you believed nobody in the room could make you answer for it.”
The director’s cheeks reddened.
“That’s not fair.”
The chairwoman looked almost surprised.
“Fair?”
He immediately knew he had chosen the wrong word.
Still, pride carried him forward.
“You came here knowing who you were.”
“Yes.”
“You knew an acquisition was happening.”
“Yes.”
“You deliberately withheld that.”
“I withheld nothing.”
She pointed toward the tray.
“It was on the page.”
The young salesman who had tried to interrupt earlier looked down.
The chairwoman noticed.
“What’s your name?”
He looked up sharply.
Then answered.
