Not anger.
Disappointment.
Boone smiled.
“Tell whoever normally fixes your problems that Hawthorne County doesn’t care who they are.”
Sarah lifted the receiver with both cuffed hands.
Boone leaned back.
Evan watched.
Behind the thick interior window, two dispatchers had begun paying attention.
Sarah placed the receiver against her ear.
Dial tone.
Good.
She began pressing numbers.
One.
Two.
Three.
Boone counted aloud after the fifth.
“Six.”
Sarah continued.
“Seven.”
Another number.
“Eight.”
Sarah did not look at him.
“Nine.”
Another.
Boone stopped smiling.
Sarah continued.
Ten.
Eleven.
Twelve.
The line connected.
No greeting.
Only a tone.
Sarah entered another short authentication sequence.
A click followed.
Then a voice.
“Authenticate.”
Sarah sat straighter.
The movement was almost invisible.
But Evan saw it.
The woman in handcuffs disappeared.
Not physically.
In posture.
Something else occupied the chair now.
Command.
“Echo Seven Tango Nine.”
Silence.
“Challenge.”
Sarah answered with a phrase Boone could not understand.
Another pause.
Then:
“Identity confirmed.”
Sarah looked directly at the sheriff.
“This is Brigadier General Sarah Hayes, United States Army.”
Every person in the room stopped moving.
Boone’s smile vanished.
One dispatcher rose halfway from her chair.
Evan stared.
Sarah continued.
“Priority Flash.”
The voice on the line changed.
“State emergency.”
“Civilian law-enforcement detention.”
“Location Hawthorne County Sheriff’s Office.”
“Secure communications device seized.”
She glanced toward the tray.
“Status physically restrained.”
Boone stood slowly.
Sarah continued.
“No immediate lethal threat.”
Evan swallowed.
“Witness present.”
The voice on the phone said:
“Stand by.”
Boone recovered enough to speak.
“What is this?”
Sarah raised one finger.
He stopped.
Not because he understood the gesture.
Because something in her face told him interrupting now would be a mistake.
The line clicked again.
“General Hayes, movement status declared overdue at sixteen-oh-six.”
“I understand.”
“Secure-device tamper alert received at sixteen-eleven.”
Sarah looked toward Boone.
He looked at the phone.
“Protective response initiated before your call.”
Sarah’s expression changed slightly.
“How far?”
“Air element approaching county airspace.”
Boone’s face drained.
“Ground liaison eight minutes.”
Sarah kept her voice controlled.
“Instructions.”
“General?”
“No forced entry unless exigent threat develops.”
Boone stared.
“No weapons presentation unless necessary.”
Evan looked toward her.
