"It was added shortly before you reached the gate. There's no supporting service-animal behavior report in the record."

For several seconds, she did not speak.

Then she asked.

"Who is occupying 1A?"

The COO hesitated.

"His wife."

The CEO looked toward the aircraft.

Behind the jet-bridge windows, a flight attendant was speaking into a telephone.

The COO continued.

"We're verifying whether she boarded under a valid ticket and whether the passenger manifest accurately identifies her assigned seat."

The CEO nodded.

"Preserve the original and revised manifests."

"Already underway."

"And make sure no one edits the records while the review is open."

"Yes, ma'am."

She took a breath.

"Send airport operations and an independent compliance representative to the gate. Please have a qualified replacement crew plan evaluated in case the captain needs to be removed from duty."

The COO answered.

"Understood."

She looked toward the waiting passengers.

"And keep customer care informed. People have connections, medical appointments, and families waiting for them. We need an orderly solution."

"Yes, ma'am."

She ended the call.

The captain stared at her.

Then at the boarding screen.

Then toward the jet bridge.

For the first time, he looked like a man beginning to understand that the situation could no longer be controlled through intimidation.

But instead of apologizing, he turned toward the gate agent.

"Who told corporate?"

The agent stared.

He stepped closer.

"Did you call them?"

She shook her head.

"No, Captain."

His face twisted.

"Then somebody better explain why this flight is being held."

The CEO moved slightly forward.

"That would be me."

The captain turned.

She looked directly at him.

"Your refusal and the altered passenger records require review."

He laughed bitterly.

"You can't interfere with my command authority."

The CEO remained composed.

"No one is asking you to operate an aircraft unsafely. Corporate operations has placed the flight on hold while the records and crew assignment are reviewed."

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

She continued.
