"This is my flight. I decide who boards."

The woman looked toward his uniform.

Then answered quietly.

"You have operational responsibilities, Captain. But there still needs to be a valid reason to deny an approved passenger."

He stared.

For a moment, the expression on his face suggested that nobody had spoken to him that way in years.

Then he stepped closer.

"Don't lecture me about aviation."

She remained still.

He extended his hand.

"Boarding pass."

The woman looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I asked for it."

She considered for a moment.

Then handed him the printed pass.

He glanced at the seat number.

1A.

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

For a brief moment, something like anxiety appeared in his eyes.

Then it vanished.

He pushed the boarding pass back against her upper chest.

"Denied."

The woman stepped backward slightly.

Her German Shepherd moved closer to her leg, remaining quiet.

The gate agent stared.

"Captain, please—"

He silenced her with one raised finger.

Then looked directly at the Black woman.

"People like you don't belong in my premium cabin."

The terminal seemed to become quieter.

Even passengers who had been pretending not to listen turned toward him.

The Black woman looked at the captain.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she glanced toward the dog's harness.

Her expression became controlled, almost unreadable.

"Are you refusing my boarding because of an actual safety concern?"

The captain folded his arms.

"I'm refusing because I can."

The woman nodded once.

Then slowly reached for her smartphone.

The captain laughed.

"What now?"

She did not answer.

He gestured toward the waiting passengers.

"Calling someone to complain?"

The woman unlocked her phone.

Selected a contact.

Then raised it to her ear.

The captain shook his head.

"Go ahead. Call whoever you want."

The phone connected.

A man's voice answered almost immediately.

"Good afternoon."

The woman looked toward the aircraft outside the windows.

Then spoke in an even, businesslike tone.
