The officer gently extended a hand to indicate a private meeting room.
"We can speak somewhere confidential."
The captain moved forward.
"That's private family property."
His wife turned.
"No."
She held the envelope against her chest.
"These are my messages. My records. And my statement."
The CEO watched silently.
For the first time, she understood that the captain's wife might not have willingly participated in the scheme.
She might be another person trapped beneath his authority.
The wife looked toward the Black CEO.
Her voice trembled.
"I'm sorry."
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then the wife continued.
"I didn't know he had taken your seat until I was already on board."
The CEO nodded slightly.
The older woman swallowed.
"But I knew something was wrong."
Her eyes filled.
"And I should have asked before I sat down."
The CEO considered.
Then answered gently.
"Thank you for coming back."
The wife began crying.
The captain stared at them.
Then at the envelope.
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, he seemed ready to reach for it.
The compliance officer stepped between them.
"Captain, please remain where you are."
The captain stopped.
His wife looked toward him.
Then whispered something that silenced him completely.
"This isn't the first time."
The private operations room was small.
Nothing about it resembled the elegant first-class cabin or the bright passenger terminal.
A rectangular table occupied most of the space.
A computer monitor stood against one wall.
Several airport procedure notices were pinned beside the door.
And the fluorescent ceiling lights made everyone look more exhausted than they felt.
The CEO entered with the compliance officer, the captain's wife, and an independent operations representative.
The captain was escorted to a separate room where he could be informed of the review process and given the opportunity to provide his account.
He protested.
Demanded access to his wife.
Insisted the entire situation was a conspiracy.
