“You had every chance.”
The manager looked away.
The woman continued.
“You are assuming the purpose of review is to confirm guilt.”
“It isn't.”
“Then why suspend me?”
“Because authority changes evidence.”
The manager frowned.
“If you remain the boss while your staff are interviewed, they may protect you.”
“Or fear you.”
“Or exaggerate against you to gain advantage.”
“Removing immediate authority protects the process and protects you.”
The manager stared.
That interpretation had not occurred to her.
The billionaire poured coffee.
The manager watched.
Then said:
“I shouldn't have thrown the folder.”
“No.”
“I shouldn't have laughed when you said you owned Bugattis.”
“No.”
“I should have asked.”
“Yes.”
The manager swallowed.
“But I still believe you deliberately refused to help me understand who you were.”
The billionaire stirred her coffee.
“That is true.”
The manager looked surprised.
The woman continued.
“I could have ended the interaction immediately.”
“I could have shown you the collector account.”
“Called the director.”
“Shown acquisition documents.”
“I chose not to.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know where your assumptions went without correction.”
The manager stared.
“So you tested me.”
“In part.”
“That feels dishonest.”
The billionaire nodded.
“It can.”
The manager looked confused again.
“You admit that?”
“Yes.”
“Then why am I the only one being examined?”
“You aren't.”
The billionaire took a sip.
“The director is being reviewed for complaint escalation.”
“Compensation policy is being reviewed.”
“Security usage is being reviewed.”
“Due diligence is being reviewed.”
“My own choice to conduct an unannounced visit is being reviewed by the board because it created legal and reputational risk.”
The manager stared.
“You’re reviewing yourself?”
“My board is.”
“Why?”
“Because governance that only points downward is theater.”
The manager said nothing.
That sentence followed her for years.
The HR interviews produced contradictions.
Some employees said the manager was discriminatory.
Others said she was equally rude to everyone she perceived as wasting time.
Several Black employees defended her personally while criticizing her customer screening.
One Latina sales adviser said:
“She supported my promotion when another director wanted someone else.”
A white employee said:
“She embarrasses junior staff.”
An Asian employee said:
“She is the best trainer I ever had.”
A security officer said:
“She escalates too quickly when she feels challenged.”
A finance employee said:
“She catches fraud everyone else misses.”
The billionaire read every statement.
