She told him that any corrections would need to be documented through the appropriate process.

Then he ended the call.

Two days later, she received the false cancellation message.

She thought it was unusual.

The investigator's office had been careful about scheduling.

Why would a sheriff's administrator cancel a state records review without a written notice?

She called the state contact number.

There was no answer immediately.

Rather than assuming the appointment had been canceled, she left the originals secured.

When the young investigator arrived and the confrontation erupted outside, the technician understood that the timing was probably not a coincidence.

She walked toward the courthouse entrance.

Saw the damaged luxury car.

Saw the older deputy holding his baton.

And saw the young woman standing in her beautiful yellow dress with both hands visible.

Then she decided to speak.

During her formal interview, the technician described everything she'd observed.

The duplicate documents.

The requests for replacement.

The false cancellation.

The supervisor's frustration.

She supplied emails and copies of administrative notes that supported her account.

At the end of the interview, an investigator asked whether she'd been afraid to report the discrepancies.

She considered the question.

"Yes."

"Why?"

She looked down at her hands.

"Because I've worked here for thirty-one years."

The investigator waited.

She continued.

"These are people I see every day. Some have been to my house. Some attended my husband's funeral."

Her voice trembled.

"I didn't want to believe anyone was doing something dishonest."

The investigator nodded.

She looked up.

"But records don't stop being records because the truth is uncomfortable."

The investigator remained quiet.

Then the technician added something that would later appear in the final investigative summary.

"If I start changing documents because somebody powerful wants me to, then there isn't much point having a records office."

The state investigator returned to her apartment in Atlanta that evening with a bandaged shoulder, an exhausted mind, and an overwhelming sense of frustration.

Her car had been transported to a secure storage location after appropriate evidence documentation.

The damaged mirror and window would need replacement.
