The young Black woman standing beside the vehicle.

And the government identification wallet resting in her fingers.

The captain stopped so suddenly that the deputy behind him nearly collided with his shoulder.

His face drained of color.

For a moment, he looked genuinely unable to speak.

Then he stepped forward.

"What have you done?"

The older deputy straightened.

"Captain, we were investigating a suspicious vehicle."

The captain looked at the woman.

Then at the car.

His expression became one of absolute horror.

"Tell me you didn't touch her."

The younger deputy shifted uncomfortably.

"Sir, she was refusing to cooperate."

The captain turned toward him.

"Did you put your hands on her?"

The younger deputy hesitated.

"She moved toward the vehicle."

The captain's voice rose.

"That wasn't my question!"

The woman watched silently.

The captain turned toward her.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

"My shoulder hurts. Your deputies damaged my vehicle and refused to verify my identification."

The captain swallowed.

He looked toward the older deputy.

"Put the baton away."

"Sir, I was—"

"NOW!"

The deputy obeyed.

The captain stepped closer.

He stared at the broken glass scattered across the pavement.

Then he looked toward the woman again.

"State Investigator," he said quietly, "I had no idea this was happening."

The older deputy blinked.

"State what?"

The captain slowly turned toward him.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he pointed toward the woman.

"That's the investigator assigned to review corruption allegations involving this department."

The younger deputy went pale.

The older deputy stared.

The captain continued, his voice shaking with anger.

"She has a scheduled evidence-review appointment inside that courthouse."

Silence settled over the square.

The captain looked at the smashed luxury car.

Then at the two men.

And finally, he delivered the words that would soon be repeated across the entire county.

"You two just made the biggest mistake of your careers."

But the woman standing beside the Rolls-Royce didn't look satisfied.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't celebrating.

Because she'd noticed something the captain hadn't.

Before the older deputy struck her car, he had received a brief radio message.
