Because strangers had watched.

Because the car had belonged to someone she loved.

And because the captain's recognition had changed the deputies' behavior so suddenly that she couldn't stop wondering what would have happened if she'd been anyone else.

Her mother listened.

Then said quietly, "Your aunt would have been furious."

The young woman laughed through her tears.

"Oh, she would've marched straight into that sheriff's office."

"With a lawyer."

"Two lawyers."

Her mother chuckled.

"And probably a television crew."

The younger woman smiled.

Her aunt had been a formidable businesswoman.

She built a transportation-services company from almost nothing, negotiated contracts with people who underestimated her, and once returned an expensive purchase because a salesman treated one of her employees disrespectfully.

She had never been impressed by status.

She cared about character.

The young investigator wiped her eyes.

"I wish she were here."

Her mother became quiet.

Then answered.

"She'd tell you that the car can be repaired."

The young woman nodded.

"And she'd tell you to make sure nobody else has to go through what you did."

The investigator looked toward the city lights outside her apartment.

"That's exactly what she'd say."

Her mother paused.

Then added, "But she'd also tell you to get some sleep before trying to save the whole county."

The young woman laughed.

"That too."

After the call ended, she stood and walked toward the closet.

She hung the yellow dress carefully.

For a moment, she considered putting it away where she'd never have to see it again.

Instead, she smoothed the fabric with her hand.

The dress hadn't caused the confrontation.

Neither had her hair.

Her age.

Her race.

Or the price of the vehicle.

The deputies had made choices.

And those choices belonged to them.

She switched off the light.

Tomorrow, she would begin dealing with the aftermath.

Tonight, she allowed herself to rest.

The video spread across Hawthorne County before the first official public statement was released.

A local newspaper obtained permission to publish a short clip from one witness.

The footage showed the older deputy pointing his baton toward the woman.
