“Oh, I need many things. Better service, for one. Perhaps someone who understands the standards expected at a table like this.”
He gestured toward the perfectly arranged dishes.
The table was covered with an immaculate white cloth. Small silver bowls held fragrant curries, carefully seasoned vegetables, and delicate sauces. Freshly baked naan rested in a polished bread basket, while elegant plates contained beautifully presented lamb, saffron rice, and intricate appetizers prepared by a kitchen team that had spent the entire afternoon preparing for this private dinner.
Nothing was late.
Nothing was cold.
Nothing had been served incorrectly.
The billionaire had arrived looking for an opportunity to establish dominance, and the waitress happened to be the only person standing who wasn't wearing a suit worth several thousand dollars.
He picked up the leather-bound menu.
Then he dropped it sharply onto the table.
The sound made one of the American businessmen flinch.
“Tell me,” the billionaire said, “do you even understand what you're serving?”
The waitress met his eyes.
“Yes, sir.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
He pointed toward the center of the table.
“Then explain the preparation of that dish.”
She glanced toward the plate.
“The lamb has been marinated with yogurt, ginger, garlic, and a carefully balanced spice mixture before slow roasting. It's finished with a reduced sauce and served with saffron-infused rice.”
The billionaire leaned back.
“Someone memorized the menu.”
A few men laughed.
She continued calmly.
“The preparation was adapted from a traditional regional recipe, but the chef adjusted the spice balance to complement the wine selected for your dinner.”
The billionaire's smile tightened.
He hadn't expected that answer.
For a moment, the waitress thought he might stop.
Instead, he decided to make the humiliation more personal.
He turned toward the American man seated on his left and spoke again in Hindi.
“देखो इसे। थोड़ी-सी अंग्रेज़ी बोलकर खुद को बहुत समझदार समझती है।”
Look at her. She speaks a little English and thinks she's very intelligent.
The waitress lowered her eyes toward the table.
Not out of shame.
She was making a decision.
She had entered the dining room intending to observe the meeting quietly, evaluate the proposed transaction, and determine whether the billionaire's company was the right partner for a planned expansion.
Now she had already learned something important.
