"What if the guest threatens to complain?"

The owner looked at him.

"Then we'll listen to the complaint and examine what happened."

She paused.

"But a complaint isn't automatically valid because someone has money."

A few employees smiled.

Another waiter spoke.

"Are they buying the restaurant?"

The owner shook her head.

"No agreement has been signed. And tonight's negotiations have been suspended."

The young employee looked relieved.

The owner continued.

"If we ever make a decision that affects the future of this business, I'll explain what I can to the people who work here."

The service captain stepped forward.

"Can I say something?"

"Of course."

The woman looked toward the staff.

"I've worked in restaurants where managers apologized to rude customers even when the employees had done nothing wrong."

Several people nodded.

She continued.

"Tonight, the owner didn't ask anyone to apologize for being treated badly."

She looked toward the young woman.

"That matters."

The owner felt her throat tighten.

She smiled.

"Thank you."

After the meeting, employees returned to their work.

The young owner remained in the hallway.

The general manager approached.

"Your mother would have loved that."

She looked down.

"She would have hated the dinner."

He laughed.

"Absolutely."

Then his expression softened.

"But she would have loved how you handled it."

The owner smiled sadly.

"I wish she were here."

The manager placed a hand on her shoulder.

"So do I."

They stood quietly for a moment.

Then he looked toward the dining room.

"Come on. There's still a hundred things to do before we close."

She laughed.

"Of course there are."

And together, they returned to work.

Three days later, the billionaire sat alone in his New York hotel suite reading the preliminary findings from his company's internal compliance team.

He had returned to the hotel after dinner and canceled every social engagement scheduled for the following morning.

The first thing he did was request a complete review of the proposed restaurant acquisition.

The second was to instruct his legal department to preserve relevant communications and suspend further action involving the disputed property arrangements.

By the third day, the preliminary picture was troubling.
