He did not feel triumphant.
He felt tired.
His leave had eight days remaining.
He had planned fishing with his nephew.
Breakfast with high-school coach.
Fixing porch rail.
Visiting father’s grave.
Instead reporters parked across the street.
Some respected distance.
Others knocked.
One drone appeared above backyard.
His mother came outside with a broom.
It disappeared quickly.
Malik laughed for first time in two days.
“You were going to hit a drone?”
“I was going to encourage relocation.”
“Mom.”
“It worked.”
The Army offered to end his leave and bring him back early if he wanted distance.
He declined.
“I came to be home.”
His company commander told him:
“You don’t owe media anything.”
“I know.”
“You don’t owe Army a performance either.”
“I know.”
“Need more leave?”
“Maybe later.”
“Take care of family.”
That mattered.
His status as soldier had become headline:
BLACK ARMY STAFF SERGEANT ARRESTED DURING LEAVE
Malik hated.
He called Dana.
“Can we get them to stop using military?”
“No.”
“Great.”
“Why does it bother?”
“Because it sounds like arrest wrong because I’m soldier.”
Dana paused.
“You want say that?”
“No.”
“Then don’t.”
His mother looked from couch.
“You’re pacing.”
“I know.”
“Sit.”
He did.
She muted television.
“Let me ask.”
“What?”
“If you worked grocery warehouse instead Army, would you be less angry?”
“No.”
“Then why do you think people cannot understand?”
“Because they keep saying soldier.”
“People use shortcuts.”
“I hate shortcuts.”
“I know.”
She reached for remote.
“Your job is not making every stranger tell your story correctly.”
“That sounds convenient.”
“It is.”
She unmuted cooking show.
Discussion over.
The state investigators started with technology.
Body-camera vendor logs.
Dispatch.
GPS.
Arrest reports.
Use-of-force reviews.
Internal complaints.
Personnel records.
Ransom’s supervisor.
Then partners.
Officer Holt was placed on administrative leave and interviewed with attorney.
For six hours he insisted he had done nothing wrong.
He did not kick Malik.
Did not write arrest affidavit.
Did not shut Ransom’s camera.
Then investigators played the recovered pre-event audio.
Ransom:
“Write that he reached for his waistband. That covers the takedown.”
Holt:
“He didn’t.”
Ransom:
“Then write attempted turn.”
The investigator paused.
“You knew report would be false.”
Holt looked at his attorney.
The attorney said nothing.
Holt stared at table.
“I didn’t write it.”
“You signed supplemental report saying you observed active resistance.”
Silence.
“What active resistance?”
“He was tense.”
“Tense?”
“Yes.”
“Did he attempt to strike?”
“No.”
“Flee?”
“No.”
“Pull away?”
“Not really.”
