They missed the point.

At his mother’s house, his nephew ran from the hallway.

“Uncle Malik!”

Malik crouched despite knee pain.

The boy hugged him hard.

Then stepped back.

“I saw you on TikTok.”

His mother closed her eyes.

“Oh Lord.”

Malik looked at his sister.

“You let him?”

“He has friends.”

His nephew frowned.

“That cop kicked you.”

Malik inhaled.

“He used force.”

“He kicked you.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you hit him?”

There it was.

The child’s version of the question everyone online asked.

Because Malik looked stronger.

Because Ransom looked beatable.

Because movies teach justice through counterattack.

Malik sat on couch.

“Come here.”

The boy sat.

“If I hit him, what would phones show?”

“That he started it.”

“Would every camera start at beginning?”

The boy thought.

“No.”

“And police have guns.”

His nephew’s eyes changed.

Malik continued:

“Being strong doesn’t mean doing everything you can physically do.”

“What does it mean?”

“Choosing what helps.”

The boy frowned.

“So you just let him?”

Malik considered.

“I let him handcuff me.”

“I did not agree with him.”

“That’s different.”

The boy looked unconvinced.

Good.

He was eleven.

His mother placed plate of food in front of Malik large enough for three soldiers.

“No more lessons until he eats.”

Malik obeyed.

At 11:17 the next morning, Assistant District Attorney Whitaker received the body-camera audit.

At 11:24, he called Dana.

“Can you come to courthouse?”

“Why?”

“I can’t discuss over phone.”

“Is Malik required?”

“No.”

“Then I’m not bringing him.”

Whitaker paused.

“Fine.”

Dana went alone.

She called Malik afterward.

“You sitting?”

“Yes.”

“Bodycam did not malfunction.”

Malik already knew.

“What does audit say?”

“Manual stop at 4:13:08.”

His stomach tightened.

“Restart?”

“4:20:41.”

“Seven minutes thirty-three.”

“Yes.”

“By officer?”

“Device user input.”

“So Ransom.”

“Likely.”

“Any audio buffer?”

“Here’s where it gets interesting.”

Malik waited.

“The model stores thirty-second pre-event video whenever recording restarts.”

“So we have 4:20:11 onward.”

“Yes.”

“What’s on it?”

Dana was silent for a moment.

“Ransom standing outside cruiser talking to Holt.”

“What did he say?”

“He says, ‘Write that he reached for his waistband. That covers the takedown.’”

Malik stood.

His mother looked from kitchen.

“What?”

He held one finger up.

Dana continued.

“Holt says, ‘He didn’t.’”

Malik closed his eyes.

“And?”

“Ransom says, ‘Then write attempted turn. I’m not arguing with you.’”

Malik’s hand tightened around phone.

“What does Holt say?”

“Nothing audible.”

“Then camera restarts.”

“Jesus.”

“Yeah.”

Dana continued.
