“I know.”

“You were supposed to be home at four.”

“I know.”

“Your nephew keeps looking out the window.”

Malik pressed his forehead to the wall.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Her voice changed.

“Don’t apologize for somebody else stopping you from coming home.”

He swallowed.

“Yes, ma’am.”

The call ended.

At 6:40 p.m., a sergeant from Malik’s unit called the detention center.

Not to demand release.

Not to threaten.

To verify status and ensure military chain knew.

The jail lieutenant became noticeably more careful after that.

Malik hated that too.

He had been sitting on the same bench.

Same charges.

Same bruised knee.

Nothing about his circumstances changed because an Army sergeant called.

Yet the tone did.

“Staff Sergeant Turner, we’re working on getting you before the magistrate first thing.”

He almost said:

“You should do that for everyone.”

He stopped himself.

Not because it was untrue.

Because he was tired.

At 8:15, Aunt Renee arrived with another attorney.

Her name was Dana Brooks.

Forty-eight.

Former public defender.

Short hair.

Gray suit.

No patience for nonsense.

She sat across the interview table.

“Tell me everything once.”

Malik did.

She did not interrupt except to clarify times.

4:04 lights.

4:06 documents.

4:09 ordered out.

4:11 grabbed.

4:12 cuffed.

4:13 body camera manually dark.

4:20 placed in cruiser.

She stopped.

“How do you know camera stopped at 4:13?”

“I watched the light.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“What time came back?”

“I saw red reflection on cage around 4:20.”

“Seven minutes.”

“Yes.”

Dana wrote.

“What happened during seven?”

“Most of force.”

“Any threats?”

“Verbal.”

“Any search?”

“Wallet.”

“Vehicle?”

“I could not see.”

“Did they claim anything found?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She put pen down.

“There are at least twelve videos online.”

“Already?”

“Millions of views by tomorrow.”

Malik sighed.

“Great.”

“One shows him kicking your ankle.”

“He used foot behind ankle.”

“You’re being careful.”

“I’m being accurate.”

Dana studied him.

“You military investigator?”

“No.”

“What do you do?”

“Logistics platoon sergeant.”

She smiled.

“That explains inventory brain.”

“My soldiers would disagree.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Report says you ‘became combative after being asked to exit vehicle’ and ‘attempted to pull away while turning toward officer.’”

“That did not happen.”

“I know.”

“You saw video?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

She slid a printed copy of the arrest affidavit.

Malik read.

Officer Ransom wrote that Malik had been stopped for an unsafe lane change.

Malik had refused to provide identification for approximately three minutes.

False.

Malik exited while “verbally confrontational.”

Subject attempted to turn aggressively.

Officer used “guided takedown.”

Malik continued resisting.

False.
