No wasted motion.
The clerk called case.
“State versus Malik Turner.”
Whitaker began routinely.
“Your Honor, state requests bond of fifteen thousand based on resisting arrest and obstruction during traffic stop.”
Dana stood.
“Defense requests immediate personal recognizance and asks court to review publicly available video before setting conditions.”
Whitaker sighed.
“Your Honor, edited social-media videos should not replace officer affidavit.”
Judge Hale looked at him.
“Did she say edited?”
Dana answered:
“We have four complete citizen recordings from before first physical contact through transport.”
Whitaker glanced at his file.
“That is new to me.”
The judge turned.
“State has body camera?”
Whitaker looked toward deputy at table.
“According to report, camera suffered technical interruption.”
Dana said:
“Seven minutes.”
Judge Hale’s eyes moved.
“What?”
“The interruption lasts seven minutes, beginning seconds before first use of force and ending after my client was placed in patrol vehicle.”
Whitaker frowned.
“Do you have official body-camera file?”
“No.”
“Then you cannot know.”
Malik watched Dana.
She remained still.
“My client watched recording indicator deactivate.”
Whitaker almost smiled.
“Your client is body-camera technician?”
“No.”
“He’s a witness.”
Judge Hale lifted a hand.
“Enough.”
She looked at prosecutor.
“Mr. Whitaker, what is alleged underlying reason for stop?”
He checked report.
“Unsafe lane change.”
Dana handed clerk a drive.
“We have pickup’s factory camera showing full turn signal sequence.”
Whitaker stared.
Judge:
“Was there collision?”
“No.”
“Speeding?”
“No.”
“Warrant?”
“No.”
“Weapon?”
“No allegation.”
“Contraband?”
“No allegation.”
The judge looked toward Malik.
Then affidavit.
“What exactly constitutes obstruction?”
Whitaker read.
“Failure to comply promptly, argumentative behavior, repeated movement toward waistband, physical resistance.”
Dana said:
“May I play twenty-three seconds?”
Judge nodded.
Whitaker objected weakly.
Overruled for bond evaluation.
The courtroom monitor lit.
Video from teenager’s phone.
Malik appeared standing beside truck.
Hands visible.
Ransom:
“Turn around.”
Malik:
“Am I being detained?”
Ransom:
“Another smart-mouthed thug who thinks he’s somebody.”
Then grab.
Malik:
“I am not resisting.”
Ransom yanking.
Malik:
“I’m standing still.”
Video ended.
Nobody moved.
The judge looked at Whitaker.
“Where is waistband movement?”
Whitaker looked uncomfortable.
“I have not reviewed all footage.”
“Then why are you asking fifteen thousand dollars?”
That landed.
The prosecutor straightened.
“I relied on arrest report, Your Honor.”
“I understand.”
Her tone suggested understanding was not approval.
Dana said:
“Your Honor, there are forty-seven citizen recordings identified so far.”
A murmur went through gallery.
Judge Hale looked toward bailiff.
“Quiet.”
Then:
“Forty-seven?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Crowd formed after officer began shouting.”
Whitaker flipped pages.
