The executive said:

“Put the airline president on.”

A pause.

“He’s in the transition meeting.”

“I know.”

“You want him now?”

“Yes.”

Twenty seconds.

Nobody spoke.

Then another male voice came through.

“Good afternoon. I understand you’re aboard the Los Angeles flight.”

The wealthy woman's expression changed.

The purser took one small step backward.

The mother said:

“I am.”

The president continued:

“I hope the experience has been useful.”

The mother looked at the champagne staining her daughter's dress.

“Extremely.”

Silence from the phone.

Then:

“What happened?”

The mother looked at the wealthy woman.

The woman suddenly seemed less certain.

The executive did not answer immediately.

Instead she handed her daughter briefly to the younger attendant.

The attendant accepted the baby carefully.

The child stared up at her through wet lashes.

The mother stood.

The cabin changed again.

She was tall.

More imposing than she appeared seated.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Nothing about her suggested the person the wealthy woman had decided she was.

She looked at the purser.

“Before I say anything, I want your account.”

The purser blinked.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

The wealthy woman interrupted:

“Who exactly are you?”

The Black executive ignored her.

The purser looked toward the phone.

Then toward the mother.

She understood enough.

“Ma’am, I—”

“Tell the truth.”

The purser inhaled.

“The passenger in 3B objected to sitting beside a mother traveling with an infant.”

The wealthy woman snapped:

“That is a distortion.”

The mother raised one finger.

The woman stopped.

The purser continued.

“She repeatedly asked that the passenger in 3A be moved despite holding a valid first-class ticket.”

“She made comments suggesting children and the passenger did not belong in the cabin.”

“Then champagne was intentionally or recklessly poured onto the baby's clothing.”

The wealthy woman scoffed.

“Intentionally?”

The purser did not look at her.

“Afterward she refused to apologize and demanded the mother be removed.”

The airline president's voice came through the phone.

“I see.”

The mother looked toward the younger attendant.

“Your account?”

The attendant held the baby.

She was visibly nervous now.

But answered.

“Same.”

The executive nodded.

“Thank you.”

The wealthy woman finally stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

The mother took her daughter back.

The baby grabbed the front of her ivory dress.

The mother settled her.

Then answered.

“I’m the person who signed the controlling acquisition of Meridian Aviation Group’s Northstar holdings at eleven-forty this morning.”

Nothing happened for a second.

The words needed time.

The purser understood first.

The attendant's mouth opened.

A passenger across the aisle whispered something under his breath.
