Changed.

Then sat alone.

The coffee-stained black jacket remained hanging across a chair.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered.

The blonde woman.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then:

“I owe you an apology.”

The CEO looked toward the window.

Chicago lights were beginning to appear below.

“You owe several people an apology.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Silence.

She tried again.

“What I did was unacceptable.”

“Yes.”

“I was embarrassed.”

“Before or after you knew who I was?”

The question landed.

She did not answer immediately.

Finally:

“After.”

The CEO appreciated the honesty.

He waited.

She continued:

“And that's part of the problem.”

He looked toward the stained jacket.

“Yes.”

“My husband told me who you were after we left.”

“I understand.”

“I kept thinking about what would have happened if the captain hadn't said it.”

“What do you think would have happened?”

Another pause.

“I probably would've filed a complaint against you.”

“For refusing your demand?”

“Yes.”

“And the attendants?”

Silence.

“I probably would've complained about them too.”

The CEO said nothing.

Her voice became smaller.

“I don't like hearing myself say that.”

“That does not make it untrue.”

“No.”

She breathed.

“I want to apologize directly to the crew.”

“They decide whether they want to receive it.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He believed she was beginning to.

Not finished.

Beginning.

She asked:

“Are you pressing charges?”

“The incident was documented.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the city.

“I am not using my ownership position to direct law enforcement.”

“If authorities ask whether I want to cooperate, I will.”

She inhaled sharply.

“But—”

He interrupted.

“Accountability isn't revenge.”

“You threw a drink at a stranger because you believed he had less power than you.”

“What follows should not depend on discovering that he had more.”

Silence.

She whispered:

“I understand.”

He hoped she eventually would.

The call ended.

Her husband did not apologize.

He sent attorneys.

The next morning, the company received a letter accusing the CEO of retaliatory governance changes motivated by personal conflict.

The general counsel placed it on his desk.

The CEO read the first page.

Then laughed.

The counsel raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“Yesterday he told me his family deserved special treatment because of their investment.”

“Today he says investment should not influence governance.”

The counsel smiled.

“People become principled quickly when leverage changes direction.”
