Not because the person covered in coffee happened to own the jet.

But because nobody aboard should ever have needed to.

ENDING

The donated black suit left the charity warehouse on a rainy Monday morning in Chicago.

The young Black American man who received it had no idea where it had come from. He only knew that the jacket fit across his shoulders better than anything he had tried during the previous two hours, the trousers needed less alteration than expected, and the volunteer helping him dress for an aviation-maintenance interview smiled when he finally looked into the mirror.

For the first time in months, he looked like the version of himself he had been trying to convince employers existed.

Not desperate.

Not behind.

Not somebody asking for a favor.

Qualified.

He turned sideways before the mirror and adjusted the lapel.

“There’s a faint mark here.”

The volunteer came closer.

Near the lower edge of the black fabric, an old brown discoloration remained almost invisible unless the light struck it at the right angle.

“Coffee, maybe.”

The young technician rubbed it with his thumb.

“Should I pick another one?”

The volunteer shook her head.

“Only if it bothers you.”

He looked at himself again.

“No.”

Then he smiled.

“Feels like somebody already survived something in it.”

Neither of them knew how true that was.

The interview took place two days later at an independent aircraft-maintenance company near Midway Airport.

The young technician arrived twenty-two minutes early.

He carried a certification folder, a mechanical aptitude score in the top ten percent of his training class, and enough nervousness to make his palms damp before he entered the building.

Three people interviewed him.

Nobody asked where he bought the suit.

Nobody knew the Black CEO who once wore it.

Nobody knew about the private jet.

The coffee.

The blonde passenger.

The red list.

The board investigation.

That was precisely how the Black CEO would have wanted it.

The young technician got the job because he knew his work.

Six months later, he was the newest mechanic on a team inspecting a midsize business jet after a pilot reported an intermittent vibration during climb.

Two senior mechanics believed the issue came from tire imbalance after landing.

The young technician was not convinced.

He checked the maintenance logs.

Then checked them again.

He noticed three earlier reports containing different language but similar timing.
