They had demanded a special governance observer role.

The Black CEO had rejected it.

The husband had not taken that well.

Now he climbed aboard without greeting the crew.

“What is going on?”

The blonde woman pointed.

“This man refused to move.”

Her husband looked toward the Black CEO.

Paused.

Recognition did not come.

Interesting.

They had never met in person.

Negotiations had been handled through teams.

The CEO remained seated.

The husband turned toward the senior attendant.

“Move him.”

The attendant looked trapped.

The CEO watched.

Here it was.

The test.

Not theoretical.

Not in an anonymous employee survey.

Real.

The attendant’s eyes flicked toward the galley.

Toward the cabin door.

Toward the husband.

Then toward the quiet Black man in the window seat.

She whispered:

“Sir, that passenger is properly assigned.”

The husband stepped closer.

“I didn't ask whether he was properly assigned.”

Silence.

“I said move him.”

The attendant went pale.

The CEO looked toward the husband.

“Your wife has been told the same thing four times.”

The man stared.

“This doesn't concern you.”

“It concerns me quite directly.”

The husband laughed once.

“You know how many people would trade places with you just to be on this aircraft?”

The CEO closed his folder.

“I imagine several.”

“Then show some gratitude.”

That word.

Gratitude.

The CEO had heard versions of it throughout his life.

Be grateful you were admitted.

Be grateful you were invited.

Be grateful you were financed.

Be grateful you got the meeting.

Be grateful you're in the room.

It was often used when someone wanted compliance without having to justify authority.

The CEO’s voice remained calm.

“Gratitude does not require surrendering a seat assigned to me because your wife prefers it.”

The husband looked at him more carefully now.

There was something about the man's composure he did not like.

“Who are you?”

The CEO almost answered.

Then the blonde woman stepped closer.

“Oh, please.”

She grabbed the iced coffee from the table.

The senior attendant saw it too late.

The woman flung the cup.

Coffee struck the Black CEO across the face.

Brown liquid splashed over his forehead, cheek, black shirt, and perfectly tailored black suit.

Ice bounced against his chest.

One cube landed in his lap.

Someone gasped.

The cabin became completely silent.

The CEO closed his eyes.

Coffee ran from his eyebrow.

Down his cheek.

Along his jaw.
