Danielle felt a small warmth beneath the unease.

It was comforting to hear someone else describe Terrence's courage and judgment. But it also raised a question.

“Why did my husband never mention your family?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Because the operation ended badly for someone.”

Danielle's smile faded.

“What do you mean?”

Evelyn looked at the seatback in front of her.

“My mother made a decision during the rescue. She ordered one team to abandon a damaged vehicle and transfer its cargo to another convoy. The decision saved the people stranded farther up the mountain, but the damaged vehicle contained equipment that was later reported missing.”

Maya looked confused.

“Missing?”

“Yes.”

“Was Dad blamed?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No. Not officially.”

Danielle studied her face.

“But?”

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.

“But there were questions. A review was opened, and several people were interviewed. Your husband was among them.”

Danielle felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

“Terrence never told me about an investigation.”

“It was handled internally.”

“Was he accused of taking the equipment?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

Evelyn rubbed her thumb against the edge of her magazine.

“My mother believed the loss was caused by a failure in the supply chain. Another officer believed it was a deliberate theft. The disagreement became personal.”

Maya looked at her.

“Was your mother angry with my dad?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No. She respected him.”

“Then why did he stop talking about her?”

Evelyn's gaze fell.

“Because my mother was forced to retire not long afterward. The review damaged her reputation, even though no wrongdoing was established. She never fully recovered from the experience.”

Danielle watched Evelyn carefully.

“Are you saying my husband was involved in the review?”

“He gave a statement that supported my mother's decisions.”

“Then why would he avoid talking about her?”

Evelyn's face tightened.

“Because the review uncovered something else.”

The words settled heavily between them.

Maya's hand moved toward her mother's arm.

“What?”

Evelyn glanced toward the aisle, then lowered her voice.

“I don't know all the details. My mother kept the full report private. But I remember hearing her argue with someone about a missing signature, a changed manifest, and a set of documents that had been altered after the convoy returned.”

Danielle felt her pulse quicken.

“Altered by whom?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you telling us this?”

“Because your daughter recognized the photograph, and because I think I owe you an explanation for what happened earlier.”

Danielle looked at Maya.

Her daughter was listening with the intensity of a child who had stumbled into a story much larger than the argument that began it.
