“This is unbelievable.”

Rachel remained composed.

“It's a straightforward request.”

Evelyn reluctantly lifted the coat and placed it on her lap.

Maya moved toward the seat, but Danielle gently touched her shoulder.

“Wait, sweetheart.”

She was still thinking about the photograph.

“Ms. Whitmore,” Danielle said, “before we sit down, I need to ask you one question.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Why is my husband's photograph in your wallet?”

The cabin supervisor looked between them.

“Is there a family issue here?”

Danielle nodded.

“Possibly.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“There is no issue. The child is mistaken.”

Maya spoke quietly.

“I'm not.”

Rachel looked at the wallet.

“Ma'am, I understand the wallet is personal property. But if there's a concern about a photograph or identification, we can give everyone a moment to discuss it calmly.”

Evelyn's expression grew colder.

“There is nothing to discuss.”

Danielle felt the baby stir again. She rocked gently, hoping he would settle, while trying to process the strange turn the confrontation had taken.

Her husband, Terrence Brooks, had worked in public service for many years. He was now a senior safety investigator for a transportation agency, but before that, he had served in a military logistics unit and worked closely with a commander named Colonel Whitmore.

Danielle had met the colonel once, briefly, at a family event. She remembered a tall woman with silver-streaked hair, a warm smile, and a habit of calling everyone by their first name.

The woman in the photograph looked younger, but the resemblance was striking.

Could Evelyn be related to Colonel Whitmore?

And why would she have a photograph of Terrence?

Danielle looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, are you certain?”

Maya nodded.

“Dad showed it to me when he told me about his first deployment. He said it was from the day they finished the emergency supply mission.”

Evelyn's face tightened at the words.

“Your father is not part of this.”

Danielle's heart gave a sudden, hard beat.

“You know him.”

Evelyn looked away.

The cabin supervisor noticed.

“Ms. Whitmore, if you know the family, it may help to clarify the situation rather than escalate it.”

Evelyn's voice sharpened.

“I don't have to explain my personal life to strangers.”

“No one is asking you to disclose anything unrelated,” Rachel said. “But the family has raised a specific concern about a photograph in your wallet.”

Evelyn stared at the supervisor.

“I want to be left alone.”

Rachel nodded.

“Then please allow the family to take their seats, and we can address any remaining issue through the appropriate channel.”

Danielle looked down at Maya.

“Let's sit for now.”

Maya slid into 14B, placing her backpack under the seat in front of her. Danielle carefully settled into 14A's neighboring position, adjusting the baby carrier and making sure her son's head was supported.

The baby slept on.

For a few moments, the confrontation seemed to be over.

But Maya could not stop looking at Evelyn.
