Maya looked at her father.
“Did she give Evelyn the photograph?”
“I believe so.”
“Why did she keep it?”
Terrence smiled faintly.
“Because she was proud of the team. That photograph was taken after the operation, when everyone had returned safely. She told me she wanted a record of the people who had done their jobs with courage and integrity.”
Danielle absorbed the explanation.
“So Evelyn was carrying a reminder of the very event that hurt her family.”
“Yes.”
“And she recognized you.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she pretend she didn't?”
Terrence was quiet for a moment.
“Shame can make people defensive. So can grief. She may have recognized you and immediately remembered the arguments she had with her mother. Seeing Maya might have made the memory even more personal.”
Danielle considered that.
“Maybe. But it doesn't excuse how she treated us.”
“No,” Terrence agreed. “It doesn't.”
Maya looked from one parent to the other.
“Do you think she's a bad person?”
Danielle and Terrence exchanged a glance.
Terrence answered carefully.
“I think she behaved badly today. That doesn't tell us everything about who she is.”
Maya considered this.
“So she can be wrong and still change?”
“Yes,” Danielle said. “But changing means taking responsibility, not just saying sorry because people are watching.”
Terrence nodded.
“Exactly.”
Maya leaned back in her chair.
“I think she was embarrassed when I found the picture.”
“Probably,” Terrence said.
“And then she got mean.”
“Yes.”
Maya thought for a moment.
“Maybe next time she should just tell the truth.”
Danielle smiled.
“That would be a good place to start.”
Terrence looked at his wife.
“Did she apologize?”
“She did. More than once.”
“Did you believe her?”
Danielle took a breath.
“I believed she felt bad. I'm not sure she fully understands what she did.”
Terrence nodded.
“That's fair.”
Danielle glanced toward the terminal windows, where aircraft moved slowly across the distant tarmac.
“I don't want Maya thinking that she has to stay quiet when someone treats her unfairly.”
“She shouldn't.”
“But I also don't want her thinking that every conflict has to become a battle.”
Terrence reached for Maya's hand.
“That's why we talk about it. You can stand up for yourself without being cruel. You can be firm without trying to humiliate someone. And you can accept an apology without pretending nothing happened.”
Maya nodded.
“Okay.”
The baby began to fuss, and Danielle shifted him gently.
