Maya noticed it because the wallet was not entirely hidden. A corner of worn leather protruded near the armrest, and a small metal clasp caught the overhead light.

She glanced at her mother.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at the wallet.

“Mom,” she whispered.

“Not now, sweetheart.”

“But there's something under her coat.”

Danielle barely heard her.

“Please, Ms. Whitmore,” she said, “we're holding up the aisle.”

Evelyn looked past her toward the waiting passengers.

“Then move.”

Danielle's eyes filled.

She hated that she was close to tears. She hated the feeling of being trapped between keeping the peace and standing up for her daughter. She hated that the baby, who had finally fallen asleep after a long night, was being jostled while she tried to negotiate for a seat they had already paid for.

Maya stepped closer to the row.

“That's my seat,” she said again.

Evelyn turned toward her.

“And I said I'm using it.”

Maya's small hands curled into fists.

“Why?”

“Because I need the space.”

“But you have your own seat.”

“Enough.”

Maya looked at the wallet beneath the coat once more.

Something about it seemed familiar.

She had seen a similar wallet before, though she could not immediately remember where. Her father kept an old brown leather wallet in a desk drawer, but that one had no metal clasp. This wallet had a distinctive stamped emblem near its corner, a small circular design surrounding a pair of crossed lines.

Maya leaned toward the seat.

“Excuse me,” she said.

Evelyn glanced down sharply.

“What now?”

“Your wallet is under your coat.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“What?”

Maya pointed.

“There's a wallet right there.”

Evelyn looked at the seat beside her.

For the first time since the confrontation began, she appeared genuinely startled.

“Don't touch my things.”

Maya's hand was already reaching toward the exposed corner.

“It's going to fall.”

“I said don't touch it!”

But the coat shifted as Evelyn turned, and the wallet slid off the seat.

Maya caught it before it hit the floor.

“Here,” she said.

Evelyn reached out.

“Give it to me.”

Maya held it carefully in both hands.

The wallet had fallen open.

Inside was a driver's license, a few cards, and a folded photograph. Maya glanced down without intending to read anything, but the photograph caught her attention first.

It showed a woman standing beside a man in front of a large building. The man wore a dark uniform with a gold badge clipped to his jacket. The woman beside him looked younger than Evelyn, but her face was unmistakably similar.

Maya's eyes moved to the identification card.

Then her expression changed.

The irritation disappeared. Her brows drew together, and she looked from the card to Evelyn, then back to the photograph.

“Mom,” she said, her voice suddenly uncertain.

Danielle turned.
