The first thing that made every passenger in first class turn around was the sound of a black plastic meal container striking the armrest.
The second was the food.
Cold pasta, tomato sauce, shredded lettuce, and thick creamy dressing poured directly onto the chest of a beautiful Black woman wearing an extraordinary gold evening gown. The sauce spread across the glittering fabric, staining the delicate embellishments and sliding into her lap. Several pieces of pasta dropped onto the cream-colored leather seat before falling to the carpet.
The flight attendant holding the container didn't apologize.
Instead, she smiled.
"There. Here's your damn food. Maybe now you'll stop acting like you own the airplane."

Her name was Jessica Miller, and she was thirty-nine years old. Her blonde hair was pulled into a tight professional bun, and her navy-blue flight attendant uniform looked immaculate beneath the bright cabin lights.
The woman she'd just humiliated remained perfectly still.
She was forty-two-year-old Maya Washington, an extraordinarily beautiful Black American woman with flawless deep-brown skin, striking dark-brown eyes, a statuesque figure, and sleek shoulder-length straight black hair. Her spectacular floor-length gold gown was covered in intricate sequins, with sculptural gold-beaded strands resting around her bare shoulders and upper arms.
The dress had been specially made for a charity gala.
It was now covered in airline food.
For one terrible moment, the entire first-class cabin fell silent.
Then a woman seated across the aisle gasped.
"Oh my God. She did that on purpose."
A man behind Maya reached for his phone.
Another passenger stopped halfway through fastening his seat belt.
Jessica looked around at the shocked faces and gave a small, theatrical laugh.
"Oops."
She snatched a white napkin from the service cart and leaned toward Maya.
"Let me clean that up."
Before Maya could respond, Jessica pressed the napkin against the expensive fabric, smearing the sauce deeper into the gold sequins.
Maya immediately caught her wrist.
"Don't touch me again."
Jessica's smile disappeared.
"Excuse me?"
Maya released her hand.
Her voice remained quiet.
"I said, please don't touch me again."
Jessica straightened.
"Ma'am, you need to adjust your attitude."
Maya looked down at the ruined gown, then slowly raised her eyes.
"My attitude?"
Jessica folded her arms.
"Yes. You're creating a disturbance."
The woman across the aisle laughed in disbelief.
"She was sitting there! You're the one who dumped food on her!"
Jessica turned sharply.
"Please stay out of this, ma'am."
Then she looked back at Maya.
"I think we need to verify whether you actually belong in this cabin."
Maya stared at her.
For a moment, she seemed unable to believe what she'd heard.
Then she reached for the boarding pass resting beside her handbag.
