"Seat 12A. First class. That's what my ticket says."

Jessica snatched the paper before Maya could finish holding it out.

She studied it suspiciously.

Then looked at Maya's face.

"These tickets are expensive."

Maya said nothing.

Jessica continued.

"Are you sure you didn't book the wrong section?"

The passengers nearby exchanged stunned looks.

Maya's phone began vibrating on the polished wooden armrest.

She ignored it.

"Would you like to verify my reservation with the gate agent?" she asked.

Jessica lifted her chin.

"I don't need you telling me how to do my job."

Maya glanced toward the boarding pass.

"Then perhaps you should return my ticket."

Jessica refused.

Instead, she waved toward the forward galley.

"Mike! I need assistance with a passenger."

A tall white man in a navy airline suit appeared several seconds later.

He was forty-five, broad-shouldered, and carried himself with the practiced authority of someone accustomed to resolving difficult situations aboard aircraft.

His name was Mike Torres.

He was the senior cabin attendant.

He approached without asking Maya what happened.

"What's the problem?"

Jessica handed him the boarding pass.

"This passenger is refusing crew instructions. She became aggressive when I tried to assist her."

The woman across the aisle immediately protested.

"That's not what happened!"

Mike glanced toward her.

"Ma'am, please remain seated."

Then he looked at Maya.

His eyes moved briefly over the spilled pasta, stained gold gown, and ruined leather seat.

He frowned.

"Ma'am, we're going to need you to move."

Maya looked directly at him.

"Why?"

"Because you're being disruptive."

She took a slow breath.

"Your colleague deliberately poured food on me. Then she tried to take my handbag and questioned whether I belonged in the seat I purchased."

Mike sighed.

"Let's not make this more complicated than it needs to be."

Maya's expression hardened.

"I agree."

For a moment, he seemed relieved.

Then she continued.

"Return my boarding pass, document the incident, and explain why I'm the person being asked to leave."

Jessica stepped forward.

"She's doing it again!"

Mike raised one hand.

"Ma'am, you need to follow crew instructions."

Maya looked toward the front of the aircraft.

The door was still open.

Passengers were completing boarding.

And the airplane remained parked at its gate.

She understood that the crew had legitimate responsibilities involving safety and passenger conduct.

But she also understood the difference between a reasonable safety instruction and an attempt to force a passenger out of a paid seat after a crew member humiliated her.

She folded her hands in her lap.

"I'm happy to cooperate with legitimate safety procedures. I'm also asking you to record what your colleague did."

Mike stared.
