Victor had worked for Meridian for nine years.

He was reliable, ambitious, and deeply concerned about protecting his position.

Brenda had helped him obtain a promotion the previous year.

He felt obligated to her.

When she called, she told him a sensitive passenger would be traveling on Flight 418.

"Someone from the corporate ownership group."

Victor frowned.

"Do you need special handling?"

Brenda hesitated.

"She's been causing problems for the executive team."

That struck him as strange.

He'd never heard a regional cabin manager describe a passenger that way.

Then Brenda continued.

"We need to make sure the crew documents any conduct issues."

Victor nodded.

"Of course."

She lowered her voice.

"Particularly if the passenger creates a disturbance."

Victor frowned again.

"Has there been a specific threat?"

"No."

"Then what exactly am I supposed to do?"

Brenda paused.

Then answered.

"Send the senior crew member a note that there may be a difficult traveler in premium."

Victor didn't like the request.

It was vague.

The person apparently hadn't done anything wrong.

And the instruction seemed more concerned with generating an incident report than preparing for a real operational problem.

But Brenda was his superior.

He also remembered how much she'd helped his career.

So he sent the message.

It identified Seat 12A.

Included a description of the woman in the gold gown.

And described her as a potential source of disruption requiring close observation.

Victor didn't know the full purpose behind the request.

He hadn't been told to accuse anyone falsely.

But he knew the information wasn't based on an actual incident involving that passenger.

That should have stopped him.

Instead, he pressed send.

Mike Torres received the message while completing preboarding duties.

He read it quickly.

Then showed it to Jessica.

"Corporate's warning us about someone in twelve-A."

Jessica leaned closer.

The note described a Black woman in an elaborate gold dress.

It instructed the crew to document any confrontational behavior and notify a supervisor if concerns arose.

Jessica gave a thin smile.

"Great. Another entitled passenger."

Mike frowned.

"Don't start anything."

She shrugged.

"I'm not starting anything."

But her expression suggested she was already irritated.

Several minutes later, Maya boarded.

Jessica saw the gown immediately.

Then remembered the warning.

She watched Maya walk toward Seat 12A with an expression that was more suspicious than welcoming.

Maya smiled politely.

"Good morning."

Jessica barely acknowledged her.

"Boarding pass."

Maya handed it over.

Jessica examined it.

Then looked toward Maya.

For a moment, she seemed surprised that the reservation was valid.

She returned the pass without comment.

Maya took her seat.

The cabin was beautiful.
