That afternoon, she returned to the school to pick Maya up. Emily was standing near the entrance, greeting children as they left. When she saw Renee, she approached with a cautious smile.
“How was Maya today?” Renee asked.
“She did well,” Emily replied. “She participated in class, finished her reading assignment, and helped a friend with a math problem.”
“That sounds like her.”
“She also asked if she could draw something during quiet time.”
Renee smiled. “What did she draw?”
Emily gestured toward the classroom window. “You can ask her.”
Maya came running out a moment later, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders. She held a sheet of paper in both hands.
“Mom! Look!”
The drawing showed a yellow school bus beside a row of trees. A teacher with blonde hair stood next to a girl with braided pigtails. A mother stood nearby, and a boy held up a tablet. The figures were simple, drawn in bright colors, but Maya had taken care to give each person a smiling face.
Above the bus, she had drawn a large sun.
Renee studied it. “You drew everyone.”
“Even Jordan,” Maya said. “He’s holding the tablet.”
“And Miss Hart?”
“She’s standing next to me.”
Renee looked at the picture again. “You made the morning look much happier than it felt.”
Maya thought about that. “It ended better than it started.”
Emily’s eyes softened. “That’s a good way to put it.”
Renee turned to the teacher. “Thank you for being patient with her today.”
“Of course.”
“And thank you for what you did this morning.”
Emily nodded. “I’m glad she’s safe.”
Renee hesitated, then added, “I hope you know I’m going to remember that. Not just the argument. What you did.”
“I appreciate that,” Emily said.
They stood together for a moment as the afternoon sunlight brightened the school entrance. Children streamed past them, calling to friends and parents. The yellow bus had already departed, and the parking lot had returned to its usual rhythm.
Maya slipped her hand into her mother’s.
“Can we go get ice cream?” she asked.
Renee raised an eyebrow. “Is that what this drawing is for?”
“No,” Maya said quickly. “I just think we had a hard morning.”
Emily laughed. “That seems like a reasonable argument.”
