“You’re right,” Dr. Bennett said. “We should have communicated better.”

Emily spoke up. “I asked the office to call, but I should have made sure the message reached Renee. I was focused on Maya and the bus.”

“I appreciate that,” Renee said. “I’m not asking you to be perfect. I just need to know my daughter is safe and that I’ll be told what happens.”

“You should expect that,” Dr. Bennett answered.

Ms. Alvarez opened the exterior camera footage. The view showed the front entrance and a section of the parking lot. The man in the gray jacket appeared near the service gate, carrying a large insulated bag. He paused to check his phone, then walked toward the bus lane, seemingly following a route that would take him around the building.

The camera captured his face for only a few seconds, but it was enough for the office staff to recognize the delivery company’s logo on his jacket.

Dr. Bennett called the school’s facilities coordinator, who confirmed that a food delivery had been scheduled for a staff meeting that morning. The driver had been instructed to use the service entrance, not the bus lane.

The coordinator checked the delivery records and identified the man as a contractor named Daniel Price.

A phone call to the delivery company confirmed that Daniel had been assigned to the school. He had apparently entered through the wrong gate after following his navigation app.

Dr. Bennett asked the company to have Daniel return to the school later that morning to provide a statement. He also requested that the company review its delivery instructions and reinforce the requirement to stay clear of student loading areas.

Renee listened carefully. “So he wasn’t trying to grab Maya?”

“Based on the footage, there’s no indication he intentionally targeted her,” Ms. Alvarez said. “It appears his bag caught her backpack as he passed.”

Renee let out a slow breath. “That’s a relief.”

Maya sat quietly, absorbing the conversation. She had been frightened by the sudden pull, and now the adults were discussing the event as a series of movements and procedures. She understood that the man had not meant to hurt her, but the feeling of being dragged backward remained vivid in her memory.

Emily noticed her expression.

“Maya,” she said softly, “would you like to tell us what you remember?”

Maya nodded.

“I was going to get on the bus,” she began. “Then I saw someone near the cars. I thought it was my friend’s brother, so I turned around.”

“Did you see the delivery man?” Ms. Alvarez asked.

“Not until his bag pulled me.”

“What happened next?”

“I felt my backpack yank me. I didn’t know what was happening. Then Miss Hart grabbed me, and I fell backward.”

Emily listened without interrupting.

“I thought she was mad at me,” Maya continued. “Because she grabbed me really fast. Then I saw the bus moving, and I got scared.”

Renee’s eyes filled. “Oh, sweetheart.”

Maya looked at her mother. “I didn’t know how to explain it.”

“You don’t have to explain everything perfectly,” Renee said. “You can tell me when you’re scared, even if you don’t know why yet.”

Maya nodded.

Emily leaned forward. “I’m sorry I startled you. I know my hands were sudden and that it probably hurt a little when I pulled you back. I wish I could have made it gentler, but I was afraid you were going to fall into the lane.”

Maya considered this.
