Ms. Alvarez connected the school’s security system to a monitor.
“This is the bus camera,” she explained. “We’ll review the original footage, not the copy on Jordan’s tablet. After that, we’ll check the exterior cameras.”
The video played again, this time on a larger screen.
Renee watched the man in the gray jacket enter the loading area. She watched his bag catch Maya’s backpack. She watched Emily react, pulling the child backward with a movement so swift that Renee felt a fresh wave of fear simply seeing it.
Then the bus stopped.
Renee pressed a hand to her mouth.
“Oh, my God,” she whispered.
Emily sat very still.
“I didn’t realize how close she was,” Renee said.
“It happened very quickly,” Emily replied. “I saw her moving toward the lane, and then I saw the bus start forward. I didn’t have time to think about how it would look. I just grabbed her.”
Renee turned to her. “You could have been hurt too.”
Emily gave a small, rueful smile. “I wasn’t thinking about that.”
Maya looked up at her. “You fell.”
“I did.”
“Your knee hit the ground.”
“It did.”
Maya’s eyes widened. “Does it hurt?”
“Only a little.”
Renee’s face tightened with guilt. “And I stood there accusing you.”
Emily looked at her. “You were frightened.”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
“No,” Emily said gently. “But it explains it.”
The principal, Dr. Bennett, entered the office a moment later. He had been in a meeting when the incident occurred and had only just received the report. After reviewing the video, he spoke with the bus driver and asked the office staff to preserve the recording.
“We’ll treat this as a safety incident,” he said. “The footage clearly shows that Miss Hart pulled Maya away from the moving bus lane after another adult’s bag caught her backpack. We need to identify that adult and determine why he was in the loading area.”
Renee nodded. “I want to know who he is.”
“So do we,” Dr. Bennett replied. “We’ll review the exterior cameras and check with the delivery companies that serve the school.”
He turned to Emily. “You acted to prevent an injury. I’m grateful you were there.”
Emily’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “Thank you.”
“And we should review our procedures,” he continued. “The loading zone needs to be more clearly separated from the service entrance. We also need to ensure staff can contact parents quickly after an incident.”
Renee looked at him. “That’s important. I didn’t know what had happened. I arrived to find my daughter crying, and nobody had given me a clear explanation.”
