“Then why didn’t you show me already?”

“Because the footage has to be accessed through the office, and I didn’t want to leave Maya alone while you were upset.”

Renee gave a disbelieving shake of her head. “You’re very good at explaining things after the fact.”

A small commotion rose near the parking lot entrance.

“Excuse me! Excuse me!”

A boy came running between two parked cars. He was ten years old, perhaps a little taller than Maya, with dark hair that had fallen across his forehead and a blue school hoodie half-zipped over his shirt. He carried a tablet in both hands, nearly dropping it as he hurried toward the group.

His name was Jordan Ellis, and he was in Maya’s class.

“Jordan?” Emily said, surprised. “What are you doing out here?”

Jordan slowed, breathing hard. “I saw everyone arguing. I have something.”

Renee frowned. “This is an adult conversation, sweetheart.”

“I know,” Jordan replied. “But you need to see this.”

He moved past a parent and held the tablet up.

“Then watch what the bus camera caught.”

The sudden confidence in his voice silenced the parking lot.

Emily stared at the screen. “Jordan, where did you get that?”

“My dad works in the school office. He was helping Mr. Lewis check the camera after the bus stopped. He sent the clip to the principal, and I saw it when I went inside to get my folder.”

“Jordan,” Emily said carefully, “you shouldn’t have taken a school recording without permission.”

“I know,” he said, looking embarrassed. “But everyone was saying Miss Hart hurt Maya, and I knew the video showed what really happened.”

Renee’s gaze moved to the tablet.

The screen displayed a paused image from the bus’s front-facing security camera. The view was slightly elevated and wide enough to capture the door, the curb, and part of the loading lane. The picture was grainy but clear enough to distinguish the people standing nearby.

Jordan tapped the screen.

The footage began.

At first, it showed the familiar morning scene: children boarding, parents waving, the driver watching the mirrors. Maya appeared near the entrance, her pink backpack bright against the muted colors of the parking lot.

Then the man in the gray jacket entered the frame.

He walked briskly between two parked cars, glancing down at his phone. Maya turned toward the opposite side of the lot, apparently distracted by something beyond the camera’s view.

The man’s bag brushed her backpack.

His hand caught the strap.

Maya stumbled toward the lane.

The bus began to roll.

Emily moved into the frame in a flash. She caught Maya and pulled her backward, twisting her own body between the girl and the bus. Maya’s backpack swung around, and the teacher staggered, nearly losing her balance.

The bus stopped.
