“Are you hurt?” Renee asked.
“No.”
“Did anything happen to your arm?”
“It’s okay. Miss Hart checked it.”
Renee looked at the teacher again. “Thank you for protecting her.”
Emily nodded, her eyes bright. “I’m just glad she’s safe.”
The crowd began to loosen. One of the parents who had been whispering looked embarrassed and turned away. Another approached Emily.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I thought something terrible had happened.”
Emily gave a tired smile. “It was frightening. But Maya is okay.”
Mr. Lewis stepped down from the bus and joined them. “We should get the principal involved,” he said. “The footage needs to be reviewed properly, and we need to identify that man. He shouldn’t have been walking through the loading area.”
Renee’s expression changed again, this time with concern rather than anger. “Do we know who he was?”
“Not yet,” Emily answered. “But the school has cameras covering the entrance and service road. The principal can review them.”
Jordan lowered the tablet. “I’m sorry I took the video.”
Emily looked at him. “You were trying to help, and I appreciate that. But school security footage is private. It shouldn’t be copied or shown around without authorization.”
Jordan nodded. “I know. I just didn’t want everyone blaming you.”
“Thank you for caring,” Emily said. “Next time, bring the information directly to an adult.”
“I will.”
Renee gently touched his shoulder. “You did help us see what happened. But Miss Hart is right. We have to be careful with recordings of children.”
Jordan looked relieved. “Okay.”
The school’s assistant principal, Ms. Alvarez, arrived from the main entrance, accompanied by a campus aide. She had been alerted by the front office after the bus driver reported the incident. Her expression was serious, but she spoke calmly.
“Everyone, let’s move inside. We can review the footage with the proper staff and make sure Maya is comfortable.”
Renee nodded. “Yes. I’d like to see the full recording.”
“Of course,” Ms. Alvarez said. “We’ll also check the exterior cameras to identify the person in the gray jacket.”
Emily stepped aside to let Maya walk with her mother. The girl hesitated, then reached for the teacher’s hand.
“Can Miss Hart come too?” she asked.
Emily looked at Renee, uncertain.
Renee took a breath. “Yes. She should be there.”
The four of them walked toward the school entrance, followed by Ms. Alvarez and the campus aide. Behind them, the yellow bus remained parked at the curb, its door still open. The morning routine had been interrupted, but the children inside were safe, and the driver had already contacted dispatch to report the near miss.
Inside the front office, the atmosphere was quieter. A secretary offered Maya a chair and a glass of water. Renee sat beside her, holding her hand. Emily remained standing until Ms. Alvarez invited her to sit.
Jordan was asked to wait in the hallway while the principal reviewed the recording. He did so reluctantly, looking back through the office window as though he feared the adults might forget what he had shown them.
