Renee pretended to consider it. “One small ice cream.”
“Two scoops?”
“One.”
“Two small scoops?”
Renee shook her head, smiling. “We’ll discuss it in the car.”
Maya turned to Emily. “See you tomorrow, Miss Hart.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Maya.”
The girl walked toward the car with her mother, still holding the drawing. At the passenger door, she stopped and looked back.
“Miss Hart?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for pulling me back.”
Emily’s expression changed. For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.
“You’re very welcome,” she finally said. “And thank you for telling us how you felt.”
Maya waved and climbed into the car.
As Renee buckled her daughter into the passenger seat, she looked at the school building through the windshield. She had arrived that morning ready to fight for her child. She was leaving with a different understanding: protecting a child did not always mean assuming the worst of every adult. Sometimes it meant slowing down long enough to discover what had actually happened.
She started the engine.
“Mom?” Maya asked.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are you still mad at Miss Hart?”
“No,” Renee said. “I was scared, and I let the fear turn into anger. I’m not proud of that.”
“Are you mad at the man?”
Renee thought for a moment. “I’m upset that he was careless. But I don’t think he meant to hurt you.”
“Miss Hart said accidents can still be dangerous.”
“She’s right.”
Maya looked out the window. “I think I’m going to be okay getting on the bus tomorrow.”
“If you feel ready, we’ll do it. And I’ll stay until you’re safely on.”
“Will you talk to Miss Hart first?”
“Yes,” Renee said. “We’ll make sure everyone knows the plan.”
Maya settled back in her seat, clutching the drawing.
The following morning, the sky was clear, and the school parking lot was busy again. Renee arrived ten minutes earlier than usual. She parked in the designated area and walked with Maya toward the bus.
