β€œHands off that mailbox! Show me your identification. NOW!”

The police officer's voice exploded through the immaculate apartment mailroom, startling a young woman passing through the open entrance with grocery bags. The forty-three-year-old Black man standing beside the silver mailboxes slowly turned his head, still holding a small brass key between his fingers and three envelopes in his other hand.

He was exceptionally handsome, with deep, rich brown skin, neatly faded black hair, a precisely trimmed beard, and broad athletic shoulders beneath a fitted dark-navy knitted cardigan. A crisp white Oxford shirt and burgundy tie gave him the polished appearance of the experienced high school teacher he was, while tailored beige chinos and brown leather shoes completed his professional clothing. A weathered brown messenger bag hung across his shoulder, filled with textbooks, student essays, and a folder containing documents that could change everything about the confrontation unfolding in front of him.

The officer was thirty-three, white, muscular, and angry before the teacher had spoken a single word. His short brown hair was neatly cropped, his fitted black uniform bore a polished gold badge, and his heavy boots struck the marble floor as he marched toward the mailboxes.

β€œI said step away from the mail!” he shouted.

The teacher looked toward the open compartment in front of him.

Then he looked back at the officer.

β€œGood afternoon,” he answered calmly. β€œCan I help you?”

The officer laughed sharply.

β€œDon't play stupid with me. We got a report of somebody stealing residents' mail.”

The teacher glanced down at the envelopes in his hand.

One was an electricity bill.

Another was a letter from the school district.

The third came from a local children's literacy foundation.

He looked up again.

β€œThen I hope you find whoever's doing it.”

The officer's expression hardened.

β€œI'm looking at him.”

The teacher stared.

For a moment, the only sounds in the room were the distant hum of an elevator and the soft rustling of the grocery bags held by the woman near the doorway.

Then the teacher spoke.

β€œOfficer, these letters came out of my mailbox.”

β€œProve it.”

The man lifted the small brass key.

β€œThat's my key.”

The officer stepped closer.

β€œYou think having a key proves anything?”

The teacher took a slow breath.

β€œIt proves I can open the compartment.”

The officer's jaw tightened.

β€œID. Right now.”

The teacher studied him.

β€œAm I being detained?”

The question made the officer's face redden.
