“The records she described suggest advance coordination. We need to authenticate them.”

The teacher nodded.

But his voice trembled.

“They knew when I'd be here.”

“Yes.”

“They knew I was checking my mail.”

“Apparently.”

“And they sent an officer who didn't know I owned the place.”

The attorney met his eyes.

“That's what we'll need to establish.”

The teacher slowly sat down.

For several minutes, he remained quiet.

Then he laughed once.

A short, disbelieving sound.

“I teach students that government power should never become a private weapon.”

The lawyer watched him.

He looked toward the door.

“And somebody may have used a police officer to help a developer buy my mother's building.”

His jaw tightened.

The attorney waited.

Then asked whether he wanted to pursue a formal complaint.

The teacher looked toward her.

“Yes.”

He took a slow breath.

“But I want to do it correctly.”

She nodded.

“We will.”

That evening, the teacher called a meeting with the building's property manager and maintenance supervisor.

He did not tell them every detail of the possible developer connection.

The investigation was still developing, and he didn't want rumors moving through the building.

Instead, he explained what had happened in the mailroom and what precautions were being taken.

The security recordings would be preserved.

Any further suspicious activity would be documented.

Residents would be reminded not to confront unfamiliar people aggressively or attempt to investigate suspected crimes themselves.

And anyone who experienced a concerning encounter could contact the management office.

The property manager listened carefully.

Then asked something that troubled the teacher.

“Should we tell tenants the police might come back?”

He considered that.

Then nodded.

“We should tell them the facts we know and the safety procedures they can follow.”

The manager looked relieved.

The maintenance supervisor folded his arms.

He was a middle-aged Black man who had worked at the property for eleven years.

He had spent countless hours repairing water heaters, replacing windows, clearing blocked drains, and helping residents carry groceries when the elevator was under maintenance.

He looked toward the teacher.

“You know what bothers me?”

The teacher raised his eyes.

“What?”

“That officer walked into this place like he already knew you were guilty.”

The room became quiet.

The supervisor continued.

“I watched him on the video.”

The teacher looked toward him.

The man shook his head.

“He didn't investigate first. He decided first.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the teacher nodded.

“That's what concerns me too.”
