The older officer became very still.

For a moment, he appeared to be searching his memory.

Then he looked toward the brown leather messenger bag.

The burgundy tie.

The familiar face.

His expression changed.

“Wait a minute.”

The younger officer frowned.

“What?”

The older man looked directly at the teacher.

“Do you teach at the high school on the north side?”

The teacher nodded.

“Yes.”

The older officer's eyes widened.

He turned toward his younger colleague.

“Take your hands off him.”

The first officer stared.

“What?”

The older officer's voice hardened.

“I said step away from him.”

The young officer laughed nervously.

“Sir, he won't even show ID.”

The older officer looked toward the teacher again.

Then whispered something that made the younger officer stop smiling.

“My daughter graduated because of this man.”

For a brief moment, the room went silent.

The teacher recognized the officer now.

He remembered a quiet teenager who had struggled through a difficult family period, missed weeks of school, and nearly failed to graduate.

He remembered staying after class to help her catch up.

He remembered writing recommendations.

And he remembered the girl's father arriving at graduation with tears in his eyes.

The older officer looked toward him.

“Sir, I'm sorry.”

The teacher studied his face.

Then answered quietly.

“I'm glad your daughter is doing well.”

The older officer nodded.

“She is.”

For a moment, emotion moved across his features.

Then he turned toward the younger officer.

“Explain exactly what happened.”

The young officer's jaw tightened.

He glanced toward the teacher.

Then toward the ceiling camera.

And for the first time, he seemed to understand that his written report might have to match evidence he could not control.

But even the older officer had no idea that the most important person involved was sitting in a luxury office six miles away, expecting a phone call confirming that the teacher had finally been frightened into selling.

The developer was looking at architectural drawings spread across a massive oak desk.

He smiled when his assistant entered.

“Well?”

The assistant hesitated.

“The police made contact.”

The developer leaned back.

“Good.”

Then he asked the question that would eventually appear in a court exhibit.

“Did they arrest him yet?”

The assistant swallowed.

“Not yet.”

The developer's smile vanished.

“Then tell our contact he needs to finish the job.”

He had no idea that his assistant had become frightened enough to preserve the message.
