“You will be if you keep running your mouth.”

The teacher stared at him.

He could feel anger rising beneath his carefully controlled expression.

He thought about the students who sat in his classroom every morning.

The ones he taught to ask questions.

The ones he encouraged to understand the law instead of merely memorizing words from textbooks.

He thought about how many times he had explained that authority carried obligations along with power.

And now an officer was standing inside his own building, threatening him for checking his mail.

The teacher slowly placed the envelopes against his chest.

“I'm not resisting you,” he said clearly. “But I need you to explain why you believe I've committed a crime.”

The officer reached toward his handcuffs.

“That's enough.”

The teacher watched the movement.

Then spoke in a lower voice.

“Before you put your hands on me, you should know there are cameras in this mailroom.”

The officer glanced toward the ceiling.

A small black dome camera sat above the entrance.

Another faced the mailbox wall.

The officer looked back.

“Good. Then they'll show you stealing mail.”

The teacher shook his head slowly.

“No. They'll show what actually happened.”

The officer's expression became furious.

“You think you're smarter than me?”

The teacher didn't answer.

The officer stepped closer.

Then grabbed the teacher's upper arm.

“Turn around.”

The teacher kept both hands visible.

His voice became firm.

“Remove your hand.”

The officer tightened his grip.

“Or what?”

The teacher looked down at the hand gripping his cardigan.

Then raised his eyes.

“Or you'll have to explain why you're arresting a teacher in the building he owns.”

For the first time, the officer hesitated.

He stared.

Then gave a short, ugly laugh.

“You own this building?”

The teacher didn't smile.

“Yes.”

The officer shook his head.

“That's the dumbest thing I've heard all week.”

The teacher slowly shifted his messenger bag forward.

“There's a property document in here.”

The officer immediately moved his hand toward his holster.

“Don't reach into that bag!”

The teacher stopped.

“Then keep your hands off me and call your supervisor.”

The officer stared.

His face reddened.

“You don't get to give me orders.”

The teacher nodded.

“Then please tell your supervisor you're accusing the managing trustee of this property of trespassing in his own mailroom.”

The officer's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough for the teacher to notice.

The man suddenly looked less confident.

He glanced toward the doorway.
