The maintenance supervisor stood near the wall.

Several teenagers sat together near the back.

The teacher looked around the room.

Then began.

“I want to thank everyone for coming.”

The conversations quieted.

He continued.

“Most of you have seen the video.”

Several nodded.

He took a breath.

“What happened in the mailroom was frightening and inappropriate. It's being reviewed through the proper channels.”

The elderly woman raised her hand.

He nodded.

“Yes?”

She stood slowly.

“I want everyone to know I was there.”

The room became silent.

She continued.

“I saw that officer accuse him of stealing.”

Her voice trembled.

“I told the officer he lived here.”

The teacher looked toward her.

She wiped her eyes.

“And he ordered me to leave.”

Several residents murmured angrily.

The teacher raised one hand gently.

The room quieted.

The elderly woman continued.

“I've lived in this building nine years.”

She looked around.

“When my husband died, I couldn't afford to stay in our old house. This place gave me somewhere I could manage.”

Her eyes filled.

“The teacher has never treated me like I was disposable.”

She looked toward the door.

“And I won't stand by while somebody treats him like a criminal for checking his own mail.”

The room erupted in applause.

The teacher lowered his head.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he stepped toward the woman and gently took her hand.

“Thank you.”

She squeezed his fingers.

He returned to the front.

Then spoke again.

“I appreciate your support.”

The room became quiet.

“But I need everyone to understand something.”

He looked toward the residents.

“This isn't only about me.”

The young mother near the front lifted her eyes.

The teacher continued.

“Several people connected with the proposed redevelopment have contacted tenants. Some have made statements suggesting the building will be sold or that residents will have to leave.”

He paused.

“No sale has been agreed.”

Several residents looked relieved.

He continued.

“The property is held through the family trust. The trust has not authorized a transfer.”

A man near the back raised his hand.

“What about the police?”

The teacher looked toward him.

“Any concerns should be documented and reported through appropriate channels. Please don't confront anyone on my behalf.”

The man nodded.

Another resident asked whether the developer could force him to sell.

The teacher shook his head.

“Not simply because he wants the land.”

He looked toward the attorney standing beside the wall.
