Then toward his radio.

For a moment, he seemed to consider what to do.

Then he made a decision.

He pressed his shoulder microphone.

“Dispatch, I've got a suspicious individual refusing to cooperate. Possible mail theft. Requesting another unit.”

The teacher stared at him.

“You know that's not what happened.”

The officer ignored him.

The woman near the doorway quietly picked up her grocery bags.

Then spoke again.

“Officer, he's telling the truth.”

Both men turned toward her.

She was an elderly white woman who had lived on the third floor for nearly nine years.

She wore a pale blue blouse and comfortable walking shoes.

Her expression was frightened.

But she continued.

“He lives here. I see him every day.”

The officer pointed toward the entrance.

“Ma'am, leave.”

She swallowed.

“But—”

“Now.”

The teacher looked toward her.

“Please go upstairs. I'll be all right.”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

But before leaving, she glanced toward the small camera above the entrance.

She remembered something the officer did not know.

Two weeks earlier, the building's surveillance system had been upgraded.

The teacher had approved the work after several residents reported attempted package thefts.

The new system recorded to secure local storage, with appropriate administrative access and retained event logs.

It also maintained a backup record through a separate authorized service.

The officer had seen the ceiling camera.

He had not seen the small equipment cabinet behind the locked maintenance door.

And he certainly did not know that the teacher had already been warned someone might attempt to manufacture a police incident inside the building.

The elderly resident reached the elevator.

She stepped inside.

Then pressed the button for the third floor.

But instead of returning directly to her apartment, she took out her phone.

She called the building's property attorney.

Because this wasn't the first strange incident involving the building.

And the person who had arranged the officer's visit was not interested in stolen mail.

He was interested in a piece of property that had become the last obstacle to an eighty-million-dollar real-estate development.

The officer released the teacher's arm.

Then stepped backward.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

The teacher nodded.

“They are.”

He looked toward the messenger bag.

Then back at the officer.

“May I retrieve the ownership documents now?”

The officer folded his arms.

“You can wait for my supervisor.”

The teacher studied him.

Then nodded slowly.

“Fine.”

For several seconds, the room became quiet.
