He stepped between us.

When she tried to reach around him toward me, he pushed her forearm away.

Not violently.

Firmly.

“Do not touch her.”

The bride stared.

“Your mother is destroying our wedding.”

He looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was unlike anything I had heard from him.

Quiet.

Empty.

“You did that.”

Her face changed.

Then recovered.

“She has no proof.”

My son reached into his jacket.

Pulled out his phone.

The bride stared.

Her sister lowered her head at the family table.

My son looked toward her.

The bride followed his gaze.

Realization arrived.

“No.”

Her sister began crying.

The bride’s face went white.

“No.”

My son held up the phone.

“Your sister sent me the video.”

The bride stopped moving.

He continued.

“Twenty-eight seconds.”

“You on the phone last night.”

Her breathing accelerated.

“That proves nothing.”

My son looked devastated.

“It proves you planned to humiliate her.”

“No.”

“You said you’d make sure she wouldn’t want anyone seeing her.”

“That could mean anything.”

“And you said once the transfer cleared, she could hate you from another state.”

The bride looked toward the crowd.

Every face had become unbearable.

She tried another strategy.

“You recorded me without permission?”

Her sister finally spoke.

“I wasn’t recording you.”

The bride turned.

“Shut up.”

The sister flinched.

My son’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk to her like that.”

The bride looked toward him.

“You’re choosing them?”

He stared.

“This is not teams.”

“She has spent years trying to control you.”

My son shook his head.

“No.”

“You told me yourself—”

“What?”

She stopped.

He waited.

“What did I tell you?”

The bride’s eyes shifted.

Nothing.

My son reached inside his jacket again.

This time he removed a folded legal document.

Her face changed.

I did not know what it was.

Neither did most people.

He unfolded it.

“I had concerns before today.”

The bride stared.

“About what?”

“About the way you kept asking when Mom’s gift became irrevocable.”

Her parents looked at her.

She turned toward them.

“This is humiliating.”

My son continued.

“About why you wanted to know whether the investment trust could be liquidated immediately.”

“That’s financial planning.”

“About why you asked whether the lake house could be sold without Mom’s approval.”

“We’re getting married.”

“And about why you told me last week that once the gift transferred, we could finally stop ‘performing gratitude.’”

Her face changed.

She whispered:

“You told her?”

“No.”

My son looked toward me.

“She didn’t know until now.”

That surprised me.

He looked back at his bride.

“I asked her attorney yesterday what would happen if I requested a delay.”

My heart tightened.

He continued.

“Mom stopped the transfer this morning.”
