Sabrina gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“We signed it.”

“Yes.”

“So we’re married.”

“Maybe.”

That word struck harder than a shouted accusation.

Sabrina stared.

Michael continued.

“I’m not standing here pretending I understand every technical requirement.”

“I don’t.”

“My lawyer said the legal status will be reviewed.”

“You called a lawyer before the reception?”

“I called before the ceremony.”

The room changed again.

Sabrina looked as though someone had moved the floor.

“Before?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Because your sister texted me at two fourteen this morning and told me that if anything happened to my mother today, I needed to ask her what she had seen.”

Sabrina slowly turned toward her sister.

The younger woman looked down.

Michael continued.

“I tried calling her.”

“She didn’t answer.”

“I tried calling you.”

“You were asleep.”

“I tried convincing myself I was imagining things.”

He breathed.

“Then Mom called and told me someone had entered her hotel suite.”

His voice broke.

“I still wanted to believe you.”

Sabrina’s eyes filled.

“Then believe me.”

Michael looked at her.

“For what?”

“That I didn’t do this.”

“You just said the gift was supposed to become ours.”

“Because it was.”

“You know what I asked?”

His voice was almost gentle now.

Sabrina shook her head.

“I asked whether you were okay when Mom said someone entered her room.”

“I asked whether you were scared.”

“I asked if anybody had been near you.”

“You know what you asked me?”

Sabrina said nothing.

Michael answered himself.

“You asked whether the transfer had already happened.”

Her mother stood.

“Sabrina.”

The bride turned.

Her mother’s voice trembled.

“Tell us what happened.”

Sabrina looked around the ballroom.

Her father.

Her sister.

Michael.

Me.

The hotel security director.

Hundreds of guests who had spent thousands of dollars on flights, clothes, gifts, rooms, and time because they believed they were attending the beginning of a marriage.

She looked trapped.

That was dangerous.

Trapped people often say the thing they have spent all day avoiding.

Sabrina’s expression hardened.

“You want to know what happened?”

Michael’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“I was tired of her.”

She pointed at me.

“Everything was always her.”

My brother shifted at his table.

I raised one hand.

No one moved.

Sabrina continued.

“The venue had to know what she thought.”

“The trust had to use her lawyer.”

“The house was in her name until the last minute.”

“She wanted reports.”

“She wanted conditions.”

I stared.

“The trust had professional management.”

“Because you don’t trust us.”

“Because it contained thirteen million dollars.”

“There.”

Sabrina laughed bitterly.

“That.”

“That tone.”

Michael shook his head.

“What tone?”

“The one where she acts like everyone else is stupid.”

I answered quietly.
