He looked toward Sabrina’s younger sister.

“The original is preserved.”

Then toward me.

“Hotel security has it now.”

Sabrina’s head snapped toward him.

“What?”

I had not known that.

Michael looked at me.

“Her sister gave them a copy while you were speaking.”

I looked across the ballroom.

The younger woman nodded through tears.

Behind the last table, almost invisible among waitstaff and event coordinators, the hotel security director stood beside two managers.

He had arrived exactly when I asked him to.

Sabrina saw him.

Her posture changed.

The anger weakened.

Fear took its place.

She turned toward her sister.

“What did you do?”

Her sister wiped her face.

“The right thing.”

“You gave them my private conversation?”

“You asked me to steal a staff key.”

The sound that moved through the ballroom was not a gasp.

It was lower.

Heavier.

People no longer believed they were watching a family argument.

They understood they were hearing an admission of preparation.

Sabrina shook her head violently.

“I did not ask you to steal anything.”

“You told me there was a surprise for his mother.”

“There was.”

“You said you needed to get into her room before breakfast.”

“I said I needed to leave something there.”

Her sister looked toward the shaved side of my head.

“You didn’t tell me that was what you were going to do.”

“I didn’t.”

Sabrina’s voice rose.

“Because that isn’t what happened.”

Michael stared at her.

“Then what happened?”

She turned.

“I don’t know.”

“You were gone from your suite at two in the morning.”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“You came back carrying something under your robe.”

“No.”

“Your sister saw the clippers in the bathroom this morning.”

“They belong to somebody on the styling team.”

I spoke for the first time.

“Which stylist?”

Sabrina looked at me.

“What?”

“Name the stylist.”

Silence.

I waited.

Nobody rescued her.

The woman who had spent years managing luxury brands, crisis communications, celebrity partnerships, and media launches could not produce one name.

Michael closed his eyes.

Sabrina looked at him.

“Michael.”

He opened them.

“Do you remember what you asked me ten minutes after the ceremony?”

Her face changed.

“What?”

“You asked whether Mom had completed the transfer.”

“That’s normal.”

“No.”

“You asked before we took photographs.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“You asked again in the hallway.”

“We talked about the gift for months.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

“We did.”

He reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo and removed a folded document.

Sabrina stared.

“What is that?”

“I spoke to counsel this morning.”

Her face went white.

I looked at Michael.

That was new to me.

He continued.

“The marriage license has not been submitted.”
