“You asked me where the hair kit was after the rehearsal dinner.”

“That proves nothing.”

“You asked me whether the hotel room doors recorded who entered.”

Sabrina’s face changed.

The sister continued.

“You asked how much of the hallway the cameras could see.”

“That is a lie.”

“I wish it was.”

The hotel security director took one step forward.

Sabrina saw.

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

I knew that look.

Exit.

The security director spoke calmly.

“Ma’am, nobody is preventing you from leaving the ballroom.”

Sabrina looked surprised.

He continued.

“But law enforcement has requested that we preserve the items in your bridal suite and that no member of the wedding party remove property until officers arrive.”

Her mouth opened.

“Police?”

I said:

“I called them this morning.”

She stared at me.

“You called police on my wedding day?”

“You entered my bedroom while I was unconscious.”

“That is not proven.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“That is why they investigate.”

She looked toward Michael.

“You’re letting her do this?”

He looked destroyed.

“I’m not letting anybody do anything.”

“The police are investigating because a woman woke up with part of her hair cut after someone entered her locked room.”

“She is my mother.”

“But even if she wasn’t, that would still deserve an investigation.”

Sabrina stared.

Then she said something I will never forget.

“It was just hair.”

The room stopped.

Michael’s face lost expression.

Her sister whispered:

“No.”

Sabrina seemed to realize too late what she had said.

She tried to recover.

“I mean if that is what happened—”

Michael stepped toward her.

“You did it.”

“No.”

“You just said it was just hair.”

“I was speaking hypothetically.”

“You knew she took a sleeping pill.”

Sabrina blinked.

I had not told Michael that part.

He continued.

“You asked your sister how strong Mom’s medication was.”

The sister nodded.

“I told him.”

Sabrina looked at her.

“You little—”

“Do not.”

Michael’s voice cut through the room.

Sabrina stopped.

He looked at her with a grief so deep that anger seemed almost gone.

“You knew Mom would sleep heavily.”

“You got a staff key.”

“You entered her room.”

“You cut her hair.”

“You left the note.”

“And you planned the timing around the transfer.”

“No.”

Michael took out his phone.

He tapped the screen.

The bridal-suite video began to play.

He did not turn the phone toward the guests.

Only toward Sabrina.

I could hear her voice faintly.

Not every word.

Enough.

I’ll make sure she doesn’t want anyone seeing her.

Then:

Once the transfer clears, she can hate me from another state.

Sabrina stared.

Michael stopped the video.

He whispered:

“Tell me that isn’t you.”

She opened her mouth.
