“I’ll explain when it’s protected.”

“You know the trust instructions are queued for noon.”

“That’s why I’m calling at seven thirty-two.”

She asked no more unnecessary questions.

“I’ll stop both.”

“Send me confirmation.”

“Give me fifteen.”

“Ten.”

She sighed.

“There she is.”

Then the call ended.

My hands were still shaking.

But the money was no longer moving.

That mattered.

I called my personal physician.

Then my son.

He answered sounding happy.

That made everything harder.

“Mom.”

“Good morning.”

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

A lie.

Not technically.

But close.

“You sound weird.”

“I slept badly.”

“Today?”

He laughed.

“You’re not allowed to be nervous. I’m the one getting married.”

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I nearly told him everything.

Then I imagined him abandoning the wedding preparations and charging upstairs.

He had inherited his father’s temper when people he loved were threatened.

I did not want a confrontation before I knew anything.

“Are you happy?”

I asked.

He became quiet.

“What kind of question is that six hours before my wedding?”

“A mother question.”

He laughed softly.

“Yes.”

“I’m happy.”

I stared at the note.

“Good.”

Then he said something I did not expect.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Did anyone come by your room last night?”

My spine stiffened.

“Why?”

A pause.

“No reason.”

“That is never true when someone says it.”

He exhaled.

“I got a weird text around two.”

“From?”

“My fiancée’s younger sister.”

I stood.

“What did it say?”

“That if anything strange happened today, I should call her before reacting.”

My heart began beating harder.

“Did you?”

“She isn’t answering.”

I looked toward the security director, who was standing near the suite door speaking quietly into a radio.

“What do you think she meant?”

“I don’t know.”

My son paused.

“Mom, what happened?”

I had spent his whole life teaching him not to lie when the truth mattered.

I could not ask him to trust me while withholding too much.

“Someone entered my suite.”

The happiness vanished from his voice.

“What?”

“I’m safe.”

“Entered how?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“What did they take?”

“Nothing.”

Silence.

Then:

“What did they do?”

My throat tightened.

I looked at the mirror.

“They cut my hair while I was asleep.”

No sound.

Then:

“What?”

“Part of it.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

He swore.

Not a word he used around me often.

“Where are you?”

“Suite.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

“And that wasn’t an option.”

“Mom.”

“Security is here.”

“Police are coming.”

“My doctor is coming.”

“I’m not alone.”

His breathing was audible.

“What else?”

I looked at the note.

“A message.”

“What does it say?”

I hesitated.

“Something ugly.”

“Read it.”

“No.”

“Why?”
