Then her handbag slipped.

The heavy black leather bag struck the vehicle's side step and dropped onto the gravel, its gold fittings clicking against the stones. The upper compartment opened, and a black identification case shifted into view beside her wallet and a folded invitation. The older officer glanced down automatically, perhaps expecting to see a weapon or some other suspicious object. Instead, he saw an official insignia and a credential that made his expression change instantly.

He bent just enough to read the visible information.

Then he looked up.

“Officer, wait.”

The younger man was still shouting.

“What now?”

The older officer pointed toward the handbag.

“Look at that identification.”

The commander kept both hands raised.

“Do not search my belongings without a lawful basis.”

Neither man answered.

The older officer stared at the credential.

He could see the photograph.

He could see the government identification markings.

And he could read a designation identifying the woman as a senior commander assigned to specialized national security responsibilities.

He swallowed.

The younger officer stepped closer and looked down.

For a moment, his expression became uncertain.

Then he scoffed.

“Anybody can buy a fancy identification card.”

The commander looked at him.

“Then verify it.”

The older officer turned sharply toward his partner.

“Maybe we should.”

The younger man's face reddened.

“Oh, now you want to listen to her?”

His partner lowered his voice.

“This might be serious.”

The commander spoke calmly.

“It was serious before you saw my identification.”

The older officer looked at her.

The words seemed to unsettle him.

He knew she was right.

The appearance of official credentials did not change what had happened on the roadside. The woman had been entitled to lawful treatment before either officer knew her occupation, professional rank, or background.

But the younger officer refused to acknowledge that distinction.

He was still staring at the credential when the sound of approaching engines grew louder.

Three black government SUVs appeared around the bend.

The lead vehicle moved toward the shoulder.

The second stopped behind the patrol cars.

The third remained farther back, allowing traffic to continue moving safely.

The commander recognized the vehicles immediately.

They belonged to the coordination team she was scheduled to meet later that afternoon.
