The officials had been traveling from a separate briefing and were using the same highway to reach the regional training facility. When the lead driver noticed police vehicles surrounding a black luxury SUV matching the commander's description, the team had slowed to determine whether assistance was necessary. The commander had also missed a routine check-in call from the group's security liaison, prompting concern about her delayed arrival.
The lead SUV stopped.
A middle-aged man in a dark suit stepped out.
He wore a discreet communications earpiece and carried a leather credential holder in his left hand.
Behind him emerged a woman in a navy blazer who served as the coordination team's legal adviser, followed by two additional officials.
The man looked toward the commander.
He saw the disturbed coat.
The dust covering her trousers.
The open handbag.
And the two officers standing beside her, one holding his jaw.
His expression became grave.
“Commander, are you injured?”
She looked at him.
“I've been subjected to an unjustified stop and force. I need a medical evaluation and an independent report.”
The man nodded.
“Understood.”
The younger officer stepped forward.
“Who the hell are you?”
The suited man displayed his credentials.
“I'm a federal security liaison assigned to the regional coordination team. We have a scheduled appointment with this woman.”
The officer glanced toward the approaching personnel.
“She's under investigation for assaulting a police officer.”
The legal adviser looked toward the commander.
“Are you detained?”
The older officer hesitated.
The younger officer answered.
“Yes.”
The adviser kept her tone calm.
“On what basis?”
The younger man folded his arms.
“She attacked me.”
The commander spoke immediately.
“After he used a Taser against me and attempted to strike my face.”
The adviser studied the officers.
“Has a supervisor been notified?”
The older officer looked embarrassed.
“Not yet.”
The suited liaison glanced toward the witness holding the phone.
“Are you recording?”
The young woman nodded nervously.
“Yes.”
“Please preserve the original video. An investigator may want to speak with you.”
The younger officer snapped.
“You can't tell witnesses what to do in my investigation.”
The liaison turned toward him.
“I'm asking that potentially relevant evidence be preserved.”
The legal adviser stepped closer, maintaining a respectful distance.
