The older officer looked down.
He froze.
The Black woman noticed where his eyes had settled.
Her expression became colder.
“Don't touch my bag.”
But he was no longer looking at her face.
He was looking at the credential.
He bent slightly, trying to read it without reaching inside.
Then he looked toward his younger partner.
“Officer.”
The younger man was still holding his jaw.
“What?”
The older officer swallowed.
“You need to look at this.”
“Forget her purse! Put her in cuffs!”
The older officer did not move.
His eyes returned to the identification case.
A title appeared beneath the photograph.
The identification belonged to the woman standing in front of him.
And the credentials indicated an authority and professional history far beyond anything he had imagined when they stopped her vehicle.
The older officer looked pale.
“She's not who you think she is.”
The younger officer laughed bitterly.
“What, some rich lawyer?”
The Black woman remained silent.
The older officer shook his head.
“No.”
Before he could explain, a low rumble rolled across the highway.
All three turned.
The approaching vehicles were now close enough to identify.
Three large black government SUVs traveled in a coordinated line, their headlights on despite the bright afternoon. The lead vehicle activated discreet emergency lights as it slowed toward the shoulder, and the second moved into position behind the patrol cars. The third stopped farther back, leaving enough room for passing traffic and the vehicles already present.
The younger officer stared.
“What the hell is this?”
The Black woman slowly lowered her right hand just enough to point toward the vehicles, keeping the movement deliberate and visible.
“I warned you.”
The younger officer turned toward her.
“Who are you?”
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she spoke with a calmness that unsettled him more than her earlier anger.
“Someone you should have treated exactly like everybody else.”
The first government SUV stopped.
Its driver's door opened.
A tall man in a dark suit stepped out, displayed his credentials, and looked toward the Black woman.
His face changed when he saw the condition of her coat and the officers standing around her.
