He had been an officer for nearly seventeen years. He knew what lawful restraint looked like, and he knew the difference between a dangerous suspect and someone asking why she had been stopped. He also knew that his partner's use of force had occurred before the commander struck him.

Finally, he spoke.

โ€œShe was asking for the reason for the stop.โ€

The younger officer stared.

โ€œWhat?โ€

The older officer swallowed.

โ€œShe was asking questions. She wasn't attacking us before you used the Taser.โ€

The younger man's face darkened.

โ€œYou're going to throw me under the bus?โ€

The older officer's voice trembled.

โ€œI'm telling them what happened.โ€

The commander watched quietly.

She did not mistake his admission for heroism.

He had participated in the detention.

He had gripped her shoulder.

He had failed to stop the younger officer before the Taser was used.

But his decision to speak truthfully mattered.

The liaison asked everyone to remain separated until the appropriate supervisors arrived.

An ambulance was requested.

The witness was asked to remain available, though she was not prevented from leaving.

The deputy vehicles were left in place while arrangements were made to preserve evidence.

The commander sat near her SUV with her hands folded in her lap.

She looked down at the leopard-print coat.

The expensive fabric had been pulled out of shape, and dust marked the hem.

For a moment, she felt an almost childish grief.

Her mother had loved beautiful clothes.

She had taught her daughter that presentation could be a form of self-respect, especially in rooms where people expected Black women to make themselves invisible.

Now the coat that connected her to that memory had become part of an ugly roadside incident.

She smoothed one sleeve carefully.

The legal adviser noticed.

โ€œIs that coat important to you?โ€

The commander smiled faintly.

โ€œIt belonged to my mother.โ€

The adviser sat beside her.

โ€œI'm sorry.โ€

The commander looked toward the highway.

โ€œDon't apologize for something you didn't do.โ€

The adviser nodded.

Then she asked quietly, โ€œDo you want us to contact your family?โ€

The commander hesitated.

Her mother was gone.

Her father had died years earlier.

Her younger sister lived in Atlanta with two children and worried constantly about her older sibling's demanding work.

She did not want to frighten her.

โ€œNot yet,โ€ she answered. โ€œLet me get through the medical evaluation first.โ€

The adviser respected the decision.
