“Why would she give me kidney?”

Rebecca smiled through tears.

“Because Bear might give his to someone else.”

“And somebody else gives…”

“Yes.”

Lily frowned.

“That’s confusing.”

“Yes.”

“Like trading cards?”

“Do not say that around surgeons.”

Lily smiled.

“So Bear’s kidney doesn't come to me.”

“No.”

“Does he still lose one?”

“If everything happens.”

Lily became quiet.

“That’s weird.”

“What?”

“He’s helping me with a kidney I never get.”

Rebecca reached for her hand.

“That’s sometimes how help works.”

Surgery day arrived twenty-six days later.

Nothing about it felt cinematic.

It began at 4:15 a.m.

Paperwork.

Vitals.

Wristbands.

Consent.

Nurses checking names.

Rebecca had imagined a dramatic moment where all donors somehow understood chain moving across states.

In reality, confidentiality meant everyone knew limited details.

Raymond’s surgery happened at a different hospital because of logistics.

He texted Rebecca at 5:02.

Tell kid I expect my crossword book back.

Rebecca replied:

Survive first.

He sent:

Bossy.

Lily wore hospital cap.

She looked impossibly small.

Mark stood near wall.

He had earned permission to be there.

Not because Rebecca forgave phone call.

Because Lily asked.

She surprised them the night before.

“Can Dad come?”

Rebecca said:

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Mark arrived at three thirty.

He looked sick with fear.

When Lily was wheeled toward operating room, he started crying.

She looked at him.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t make that face.”

He laughed through tears.

“What face?”

“The funeral one.”

Rebecca almost broke.

Lily reached one hand.

Mark took it.

Then Rebecca.

Two parents.

No marriage.

No reconciliation fantasy.

Just their child.

At doors, they had to let go.

Lily said:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Mango.”

Rebecca stared.

“The cat.”

“Tell him?”

“You tell him yourself when you get home.”

Lily smiled.

“That was cheesy.”

“I know.”

Doors closed.

Rebecca collapsed into Mark’s arms before remembering she hated him.

He held her.

She allowed it for thirty seconds.

Then stepped away.

“Don't misunderstand.”

“I won't.”
