“His years.”

“Once he got them, they were his.”

Thomas became quiet.

“I like that.”

Claire did too.

Years.

Not borrowed.

Not owed.

At seventy-eight, Claire began sorting family papers.

Not because dying.

Because Elena threatened.

“You have boxes labeled MISC.”

“It means miscellaneous.”

“It means future me hates you.”

Claire opened one.

Inside were copies of Lily’s articles.

Rebecca’s hospital bracelets.

Raymond’s funeral program.

A faded Iron Covenant patch.

Mark’s letter to Lily.

Not the cruel call.

The later apology.

Claire sat with it.

She had read before.

Now old paper.

Should archive receive?

She called Elena.

“What do you think?”

Elena read.

“He apologized well.”

“Yes.”

“Do we owe public?”

“No.”

“Then why donate?”

“History.”

Elena shrugged.

“History has enough paper.”

Claire laughed.

They kept privately.

Then Claire found something she had never seen.

A small digital voice recorder.

Label in Rebecca’s handwriting:

LILY — AGE 10, AFTER DISCHARGE. DO NOT PLAY WITHOUT HER.

Lily was dead.

Rebecca dead.

What did “without her” mean after death?

Claire hesitated.

She called Elena.

Elena said:

“That is classic family ethical trap.”

“Helpful.”

“Do you know what’s on it?”

“No.”

“Could be private.”

“Yes.”

“Could delete.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to listen?”

“Yes.”

“Then admit curiosity.”

Claire frowned.

“You're annoying.”

“You raised me.”

They decided together.

Because recording explicitly tied to Lily and Lily had left much of medical history to family archives later, maybe listen once.

If clearly private, destroy.

Claire connected device.

The audio began with Rebecca.

“Okay.”

Lily’s child voice:

“Is it on?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

“Then why are we doing this?”

“Because Dr. Reed said sometimes talking helps.”

“I don't like talking.”

“You’re doing it now.”

“That's different.”

Claire smiled.

Then Rebecca:

“What do you remember about the motorcycles?”

Lily laughed.

“Loud.”

“Anything else?”

“Bear was huge.”
