“Then years passed.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“You came when it mattered.”
“That doesn't erase.”
“No.”
Both true.
That had become Rebecca’s new way of understanding people.
Mark had done something unforgivable-feeling.
Then began doing better.
Raymond had stayed absent.
Then appeared.
Rebecca herself had hidden some truths from Lily thinking protection.
Everyone contained contradictions.
The question was not whether one good act erased a bad one.
It did not.
The question was what a person did next.
Mark kept showing up.
Not perfectly.
He attended transplant follow-ups when invited.
Learned medication schedule.
Helped with school reentry.
Paid support without being chased.
When Lily was twelve, she finally learned the full story of his initial refusal.
Not from Rebecca.
From the internet.
Some stranger had posted old screenshot from Mark’s former fiancée discussing why engagement ended.
Lily came home from school silent.
Rebecca knew immediately.
“What?”
Lily put phone on table.
Rebecca read.
Her stomach dropped.
“Sweetheart.”
“Is it true?”
Rebecca sat.
“Part.”
“What part?”
Rebecca refused to soften.
“Your father initially refused testing.”
“Because of a scar?”
“Yes.”
Lily stared.
Rebecca continued.
“He later changed his mind.”
“He completed evaluation.”
“He was not medically approved to donate.”
Lily’s face went blank.
“He said I wouldn't know.”
Rebecca’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Lily stood.
“Does he love me?”
There was no safe answer.
Rebecca could not enter Mark’s heart.
“I believe he does.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know.”
Lily cried.
Angry tears.
“He loved pictures more.”
“At that moment, he behaved like something mattered more.”
“That's true.”
“Does love count if you do that?”
Rebecca closed eyes.
“I don't know how to measure love from one worst decision.”
Lily hated answer.
Rebecca continued.
“You are allowed to be angry.”
“You are allowed not to see him for a while.”
“You are allowed to see him.”
“You do not owe him forgiveness because he tried later.”
“You also don't have to hate him because other people do.”
Lily whispered:
“What would you do?”
Rebecca looked at her.
“I can't choose this for you.”
Lily did not see Mark for two months.
Mark accepted.
He sent one letter.
No excuses.
I said something cruel and cowardly when you needed me. I cannot make it smaller by explaining fear. Your mom is telling truth if she says I later tried to change. That does not mean you have to trust me quickly. I will be here if and when you want to talk.
Lily read twice.
Then placed in drawer.
At thirteen, she called him.
